Laptop shuts down randomly

My wife has been nagging me to address her laptop issue for a while now.  Can you help me?

 

The problem is that it shuts down randomly.  Sometimes it will go a few days and sometimes only 15 minutes before the thing shuts down. Although i wasn't really paying attention, it just happened in front of me.  The system seemed to go to sleep but when i went to wake the laptop, the system started up from a full shut down (i had to log in and all applications were closed.)  There are no special warnings indicating that the system had an unexpected shut down..  

 

I had hoped that i fixed a similar problem on this system a year ago when it was also over heating.  No more overheating but still shutting down.

 

The system in question is a Samsung NP-R580 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.  i3 2.4GHz; 4.00GB RAM.  We're running Norton 360 Premier for anti-virus and firewall.

1.  Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
2.  Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  Clicking on this link will automatically initiate the download.  
 
When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.
 
The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

Install latest version of:

Norton 360 Premier
McAfee SiteAdvisor
McAfee WebAdvisor
Java
Intel HD Graphics driver

 

 

Turn off hibernation to find out if your computer is entering hibernation mode when you put laptop to sleep mode and battery power get low.

 

 

Open Command Prompt by typing cmd.exe  into Start Menu search menu right click the cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

Type powercfg  /h off  command into Command Prompt and press Enter key to disable hibernation you can re-enable the hibernation by typing powercfg /h on command.

 

Install latest version of the device drivers.

 

 

 

Open Command Prompt as a administrator and type Sfc /Scannow command and press Enter key to repair any damage Windows system files.

Thank you Freebooter.

 

I installed the latest version of java and i already had the latest version of Norton and Intel HD graphics driver.  I uninstalled the two McAfee products.  I suspect that i have had some Norton and McAfee conflicts in the past and i don't know why these two McAfee applications are still here.

 

Hybernation was already turned off according to the control panel but i anyway disabled by at the command prompt as you suggest.

 

All device drivers already have the latest update

 

Scannow did not find any damage system files

I would ask you to Perform Clean Boot but as you have said this issue sometimes wont happen for days when you do clean boot you will be disabling third party services so some programs may not work or program service disabled may work but not all features of the program may not work till you enable its service. You will also disable startup programs which one of them may cause the issue as well you can test your computer while Windows booted with clean boot state.

It shut down again since my last post.  Clean Boot performed and monitoring.

 

Here's another observation about the unexpected shutdowns.  The screen turns off (like normal power saving) and then within a few seconds the laptop powers down.  There is never any warning or message about an unexpected shutdown when turning the power back on.  From my perspective, the systems acts as if the user initiated a shutdown.

I had this happen with my Asus laptop and it was so frustrating.  It was just a random thing, it would shut down after 10 minutes one day, and sometimes it would go for days.  There was one thing that always shut it down quickly and that was QuickBooks online.  Not sure why, but every time I started my billing it would 90% of the time shut down.

 

At any rate, it ended up being my motherboard.  Replacing it (although expensive) fixed the issue.

 

Hope your issue is different, but if no, maybe contact support for your laptop.

My wife reports that it shutdown 3x today with only 2-3 minutes between events.  

 

It's on the Samsung Optimized Power plan which seems to be a balance between Power Saver and High Performance plans.

 

To my knowledge, the laptop has only shutdown while on AC power.  I've had it running on battery power now for 30min and no issues.

Okay there maybe issue with power jack of the laptop or AC adapter faulty if laptop does work normally with only  battery connected.

I'm back to thinking that there could be an over-heating issue.  On battery power the motherboard was reaching 63C but on AC power, i saw it running steady at 77C and spiking to 80C.  After blowing out the air vents, it's running ~4C cooler.  Anyone know what temperature this laptop would shut itself off to prevent over-heating?

The 80C is not good for normal laptop usage even do your laptop CPU maximum temperature allowed at the processor die is 105°C so if CPU temperature reaches around 100C or little less your laptop may shutdown. If you can disassemble the laptop to clean dust and dirt from inside of the  laptop and fans also apply new Thermal Paste to CPU.
