Uh...no that won't work. The drive you bought will not work with the computer you got. You wasted your money. You want to put a new GM engine into an old Toyota? Same idea here. Next time get some advice from a computer repairshop before jumping in with both feet.

Edit: Maybe make a new post and ask how to build a system using what you got? Toss that old XP. Hardware guys here know their stuff.

Yes, the adapter will work but you may not be able to boot from the drive. You also need to make sure you have enough space behind the SATA drive with the adapter attached.

https://www.amazon.com/Parallel-DVD-ROM-Interface-Convert-Adapter/dp/B003AG79GO/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1466878474&sr=1-5&keywords=SATA+to+IDE

Plug the adapter into the rear of the drive then attach your ribbon cable and molex power connector to the adapter.

You will be able to burn disks and explore disks but I can't say for sure if the BIOS would detect the drive as being able to boot from a disk such as an OS disk.

If you have an Ebay account adapters such as I referenced on Amazon can be obtained for about the same price with free shipping.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pata-IDE-To-Sata-Hard-Drive-Adapter-Converter-3-5-HDD-Parallel-to-Serial-ATA-New-/310211073905

Edit: One important thing I forgot to mention. Because SATA does not have a Master/Slave jumber the optical drive has to have it's own IDE port with no other device attached.

Your other option is to purchase a USB external burner.

Either Amazon or the Ebay one I linked to should be fine. If purchasing from Ebay make sure you are buying form a high rated seller. The Ebay link I provided allows for a money back guarantee.

Did you see the edit on my previous post. You can only have the SATA burner on it's own IDE port with no other device attached.

Just a reminder, as you already know, before touching anything in the case, pull the power and hold your power button down for 30 seconds. Remove your side panel and touch some bare metal of the case.

the drive is reading, its very very quiet

at the back of the drive is a red light?

the drive came without papers or anything to tell me what lights mean

since red light doesn always mean something good, what is it?

I am not familiar with a led on the back of the drive, only the front. If Windows can detect the drive and read disks that is a good sign. Can you confirm something? If you place a bootable disk such as an OS install disk in the tray then restart the computer, does the disk boot using this adapter?

Edit: Is this red light on the back of the adapter? Then that is normal. This just tells you power is getting to the adapter.
