Blacklisting allows all applications to run by default except those identified as bad or those you specifically do not allow.
Whitelisting blocks every application from running by default except for those you explicitly allow.

Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware Beta is the evolution from CryptoMonitor. Malwarebytes acquired EasySync Solutions and hired Nathan Scott...see Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware Beta Feedback and Discussion

Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware monitors all activity in the computer and identifies actions which are typical of ransomware activity. It keeps track of all activity and, once it has enough evidence to determine a certain process or thread to be ransomware, blocks the infection and quarantines the ransomware before it has a chance to encrypt users' files.

Malwarebytes Forum: Introducing Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware Beta

Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware uses advanced proactive technology that monitors what ransomware is doing and stops it cold before it even touches your files. It has no shot at encrypting. And it does not rely on signatures or heuristics, so it’s light and completely compatible with antivirus.

MalwarebytesLabs Blog: Introducing the Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware Beta

WinAntiRansom blocks ransomware before it can encrypt data by using a combination of whitelisting, artificial intelligence algorithms and definitions (Smart Recognition) provided though a layered approach of features.

  • Auto Discovery automatically fills the Programs page with programs it discovers and automatically whitelists all known safe programs.
  • Access History provides a list of all files/folders opened by programs not considered safe and not allowed to access the SafeZone.
  • PreEmptive Strike provides information about every time it blocked a program from running.
  • SafeZone prevents ransomware from manipulating documents, photos, music, etc.
  • Network Lockdown provides information when a non-approved program attempts to access files on a network.
  • Registry protection protects important Registry keys from being manipulated by ransomware.
