Ok so I have a Compaq EVO D51S running Windows XP Pro but whenever I turn it on it goes through the first two (boot options then logo) screens, then I'm stuck with the black screen with a blinking cursor, I'm going to try changing the CMOS battery in an hour or so but have a feeling it may not work, I've tried booting a Windows CD to put a fresh install on but I get the same screens, any ideas?

will it let you type anything in? If it does allow you to type in words, type the word "help" and see if a list of msdos commands come up.

It doesn't unfortunately, so far I've tried checking everything is connected properly, changing the CMOS battery and reinstalling Windows, I've got to "Press any key to boot from cd/dvd" but after pressing a key it just stays on this screen.
