hi BC,

my girlfriend asked me to look at her machine as windows defender was quitting soon after startup and she couldn't get the service to restart, as well as some browser popups that made me think of Win32/FakeRean. i ran GMER to see what that turned up.  i downloaded avg free, set it up, scanned the system and everything reported as clean. in the meantime i did some digging around in the registry to see if i couldn't work out what was going on with defender in the first place. found DisableAntiSpyware and DisableAntiVirus keys in HKLM\..\defender. i tried taking ownership and deleting them, they reappear after an arbitrarily short amount of time.

i've attached logs from gmer, frst and hijackthis. thanks for the help in advance.

After the restart of the computer make sure that only one of these security programs is enabled.
AV: AVG AntiVirus Free Edition
AV: Bitdefender Antivirus

You should never run both of these programs in real life.
It will only slow the computer and create problems.

looks to be running fine, a few issues the first time i rebooted- i couldn't delete things, not a valid ms-dos operation or something similar- but i rebooted again and everything seems to be back to normal.

EDIT: by "things" i mean folder items, not installed programs.
