I was looking at a few websites recently and got a popup that I would relate to as Ransomware. ("Don't close this window. You have to call this number...yada yada yada) Well I closed it anyway. Right away I ran MBAM (clean) and a virus scan, Trend Micro Internet Security (clean) So I figured ok no problem it was a hoax and I'm fine. I decided to try one my thing and ran Adwcleaner and here's where my issue comes. Something did get flagged here. A Chrome extension. One problem. As far as I can remember I've never installed Chrome at all. I checked Regedit since that's where it said the issue was and that key (if I'm using the right word) couldn't even be found so I'm totally confused. The issue the got flagged was HKLM\SOFTWARE\Google\Chrome\Extensions\bmiabdepfhhiieiipmeecdmeljggmfee  I'm noticing a little freezing up with ads that come up. Just the normal ones. Nothing out of the ordinary. I've had this problem for a while anyway it just seems to be happening a little more frequently.

Suggestions?

Ok it looks like it removed that malware.. Do these next.

3Al62Pm.pngMiniToolBox
  • Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
  • Checkmark the following checkboxes:
    • Flush DNS
    • Report IE Proxy Settings
    • Reset IE Proxy Settings
    • Report FF Proxy Settings
    • Reset FF Proxy Settings
    • List content of Hosts
    • List IP configuration
    • List Winsock Entries
    • List last 10 Event Viewer log
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run. Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.
lv0mVRW.pngJunkware Removal Tool
  • Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
cvMlKv6.pngESET Online Scanner
  • Click here to download the installer for ESET Online Scanner and save it to your Desktop.
  • Disable all your antivirus and antimalware software - see how to do that here.
  • Right click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Place a checkmark in YES, I accept the Terms of Use, then click Start. Wait for ESET Online Scanner to load its components.
  • Select Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications.
  • Click Advanced Settings, then place a checkmark in the following:
    • Remove found threats
    • Scan archives
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • Click Start to begin scanning.
  • ESET Online Scanner will start downloading signatures and scan. Please be patient, as this scan can take quite some time.
  • When the scan is done, click List threats (only available if ESET Online Scanner found something).
  • Click Export, then save the file to your desktop.
  • Click Back, then Finish to exit ESET Online Scanner.

Seems pretty good if not better then it was honestly from what I can tell. A LITTLE intermittent hanging on, for example, Youtube, but other then that I don't notice anything. I assume I should delete the quarantined items that ESET found?

You can delete all if you like. FYI an item in quarantine can no longer harm your machine.

Ok so then it look like I'm clean right? If so, could you give me some uninstall help with the things you used?

Yes... nothing installed but ESET.. Just remove the desktop icons.

How do I uninstall the ESET Online Scanner components from my computer?

After every scan, an option to delete files and uninstall ESET Online Scanner with all its components is provided. Select the check box next to Delete application's data on close to automatically uninstall the scanner once you are done. However, if any files were quarantined, the ESET Online Scanner directories will not be removed.

Manual Uninstall: Delete the esetonlinescanner directory from the following location: %userprofile%\appdata\local\eset

Unfortuately I've run into another issue. I think I clicked a bad link. I got a popup and a beeping noise. I didn't see what the popup what because I just shut my browser ASAP. So far I've run:

AdwCleaner (Clean)

MBAM "Custom" Scan (Clean)

I'm about to run ESET. I'm trying to follow your previous instructions to figure this out and see if I have anything. I haven't noticed any issues so far. Is there another route I should take to investigate this?

ESET came back clean.

Edit: I don't know if this will mean anything or not but I'll put it out there. I did some updates and had to reboot. Just for the heck of it I ran JRT to see if something would come up and it did. A couple temp files. Is this typical or do you think it might mean something?

Just temp files nothing really.

We need to download Temp File Cleaner (TFC) by OldTimer:
  • Please download TFC.exe by Oldtimer at one of the two links: Link 1 Link 2
  • Save and close all running applications
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run the program
  • Click on Start to begin the cleaning process
note: this program may close running applications, make your screen disappear temporarily, or require a reboot of your PC - this is normal and part of the cleanup
  • When the scan is complete, if you were not asked to reboot the computer, please do so now
More Information can be found about the tool here: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/file/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer/
