Okay, let me start with the fact that I really don't know what the hell I'm doing. But I'm learning fast. I received a message from my ISP (RoadRunner) that my computer was being used to route spam through and if I didn't fix it I would lose my service. So here I am. I keep getting SexList, SpySheriff, and Torpig (although Torpig is down to one file that I can't delete... C:/WINNT/Temp/$_2341234). SexList and SpySheriff (along with a few random others that pop up on occasion) keep coming back though. Rewriting themselves or getting reinfected? Not sure. Anyway, I went through all the steps in the preparation guide before posting this, and the only one I can't complete is the Ad-Aware scan. I had Ad-Aware before finding you folks and it worked fine. Then out of nowhere it started freezing when attempting to delete the files. I uninstalled it and downloaded again (from download.com) but on the next scan it shut my computer down and restarted (I would almost call it a crash, but it was a restart). I checked the settings to see if something got changed, but couldn't see anything about restarting after deleting the files. I think this process - ERVICE~1.EXE - is the one running spam, but that's just a guess out of left field. It was showing up in task mgr and using almost 100 CPU before I downloaded the ZA firewall. I got ZA messages about it and regedit.exe trying to connect to the internet zone which I denied. Also, had a lot of browser hijacks some time ago. Most often I was sent to Yahoo Finance China Gold Corp. Haven't had that in a while, but still lots of pop-ups. Google toolbar used to block most of them, but it's not as effective now. Are they coming from inside my computer? Hope all (or just some) of this info is actually useful. Thanks!

Hello,

I notice that you do not seem to be running Antivirus software. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
That's why I want you to install it first!!

Avira, AVG OR Avast are good FREE antivirus.

Go to start > controlpanel > software > add/remove programs and uninstall next if present:

Oin
Yazzle by Oin
Purityscan by Oin
Snowballwars by Oin
Cowabanga by OIN
or anything similar with Oin in it.

If OIN not listed, download and run this uninstaller.

Reboot when done! Really important!

After reboot,

* Open hijackthis, click 'config' (bottom right)
Choose the tab 'misc Tools' on top.
Choose 'delete a file on reboot'
In the field, copy and paste next:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll

Click open.
Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now. Click Yes/ok
Your system should reboot now.

Once again after reboot,

Please download, install, and update Ewido anti-spyware
  • Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Then click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
  • Close Ewido and reboot!!
  • Post the contents of the Ewido log you saved in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Hello,

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the Posted Image icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
There are some additional logs I need.. because above infection never comes alone and in most cases a rootkit is present as well.
I am also pretty sure that a lot of leftovers are remaining on your disk.
So perform next:
Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there...
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
I need that log later.

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog and the log from blacklight.

Hello,

Please read this first:
You have to delete some folders, but they are a bit more advanced to remove, because this infection uses names and files of legit folders to confuse people. So the folders/files can look exactly the same as legit folders.
It can happen that you'll find two same folders in one place, a legit/good one and a bad one. So really be careful here you don't delete the good folder.
To find out easily which one is the good and the bad one, rightclick the folder I mention and choose properties
There you'll find the date being made/modified.
So in my next instructions to delete the folder, I'll add the date of the bad folder as well, so make sure it's that date!
In case it's another date, don't delete that folder!! Because that will be the good folder.
Also, these bad folders will only have one file present in it - or none. And in most cases those files won't have an icon.
In case when you are in doubt, don't delete that folder, but tell me afterwards.
Once again, make sure you don't delete the legit/good folders!!

So delete next folders:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\F?nts<== this folder, will most probably look like Fonts. Please make sure you don't delete the legit Fonts folder. The one you have to delete, when you rightclick the folder and choose properties, the date should be 2006-06-24 08:53:44

C:\Program Files\Common Files\?ymantec <== this folder, will most probably look like Symantec. The folder is dated: 2006-06-28 07:36:34

C:\Program Files\?ystem32 <== folder, will most probably look like system32. Make sure you don't try to delete the legit system32-folder. the bad folder is in your C:\Program Files and is dated 2006-08-08 19:41:12

C:\Documents and Settings\Hope1\Application Data\M?crosoft.NET <== folder, will most probably look like Microsoft.Net. Don't delete it anywhere else. The date is 2006-08-04 19:03:54

C:\Documents and Settings\Hope1\Application Data\?racle <== Folder, will most probably look like Oracle, dated 2006-07-29 12:39:12

C:\Program Files\S?mantec <== folder, will most probably look like Symantec, dated 2006-07-26 20:44:32

C:\Program Files\Common Files\?racle <== will most probably look like Oracle, dated 2006-07-09 09:07:44

C:\Program Files\?racle <== will most probably look like Oracle, dated 2006-07-01 09:30:50

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\sharedtaskscheduler]
"{2C1CD3D7-86AC-4068-93BC-A02304BB2236}"=-

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2C1CD3D7-86AC-4068-93BC-A02304BB2236}]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Your hijackthislog looks clean again.
Let me know in your next reply how things are running now.
