Hi, for the last 2 days my pc would get the error message: svchost.exe - application error shortly after startup and then it would freeze up and I would have to power it off. I would say 8 out of 10 times it would do this, the other 2 times after rebooting it would be fine. It would not get the error in safe more. Last night I used system restore to go back to about a month ago. When I started up after that I still got the error so I gave up for the night. This morning it started without the error though. I decided to try to clean everything up in case it was some malware. I ran ccleaner, Norton Internet Security 2006's antivirus scan, SPybot, Adaware, Ewido, spyware blaster, windows defender, house call online and finally stinger and ccleaner again. I also ran microsoft update until I got everything. I rebooted 10+ times today and it has started everytime without error. I did take the pc to work with me so it could run all this stuff while I was working and I have now taken it home and I have not turned on the printer on usb drive yet but basically it now seems to be working fine but all this has made me think it would be a good idea to have my log file looked at to see If I missed anything that may be waiting around for an oppunity. I did not install any new programs before this started happening but I was gone on vacation for 2 weeks right before and the pc was off for that time. Anyway this is not any kind of prioity since it seems to be fine now but if someone could check out my log that would be great.

Thanks,

Ned

Hello Ned O and welcome to the B HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

Svchost.exe is a windows process which loads many of the services used on a computer. Without knowing the exact service which was causing the problem it would be impossible to say what was happening. Since the problem appears to be gone, I'd say you are good to go.

The only other thing I see is that both MS Defender and Ewido are active. It is Ok to have both installed but I wouldnot have both of them running at the same time. Sine they both perform the same task they can interfere with each other and end up blocking each other from doing their job. I would disable 1 or the other so that both do not startup with windows. A good rule of thumb: 1 anti-virus, 1 firewall and 1 anti-spyware program running at any given time.

Cheers.

OT

Thanks for checking out the log, I have not had any crashes since I posted. I will turn off ewido since I just have the free version and only use it to run the manual scans in the future.
