Hi all,

I have a laptop that I bought from a friend, and it does was it should for my needs, but it does freeze at times, and is slow. I think there's a lot of stuff on it that isn't needed, and I have no clue what to take off safely without hurting the Windows system. It didn't come with any documentation or reinstall cds either.

Can anyone help me figure out what is wrong, and what I can take off without a negative impact?

It's storming over here, so I'm going offline shortly.  However, download and install Minitoolbox and Piriform's Speccy.  Save your logs.  Others will tell you how to post logs and publish Speccy's report.  Many BC folks use Speccy as a list of things to get rid of, and a list of things to alter.

(A friend of mine was very hesitant about Win 10 as shown in the log. I'm leery of W10 myself, although I planned to get a desktop with it and leave W 8.1 on here.

I just want to try to take off anything that can slow it down, take away anything that is not essential to use this laptop. It seems there's too much on here, not including the memory.
Sometimes a box comes up telling me something is trying to load, but I've not tried to dl a program recently.

Ive noticed in the Reports you have various failed Updates and 2 Anti viruses running  - Norton and McAfee { Only need One }.

Have you thought about Using the Recovery Partition to do a Factory Recovery ?

Otherwise it may be a long Process in trying to cleanup what you have now.

Is there anything on the Drive that is required as in personal files ?

I would go with the Recovery , then remove all the Unwanted Programs via Add/Remove Programs , Install Windows Updates , get a free  Antivirus.

HP Recovery - Instructions can be found on their Website - to your Model etc.

Otherwise wait until someone with more time can assist you in cleaning it up - if you go that route.

I just noticed that I have something popping up that reads as "Unable to download txt Spub.txt from 'image4.pubmatic.com' I do not remember even going to anything like this. Is it some sort of hijacker on another program or site?

@Havachat, Which one - McAfee or Norton is better? Norton came with my cable/internet subscription, but McAfee has been on here forever and I think since I didn't like it, I forgot it was here.

"Have you thought about Using the Recovery Partition to do a Factory Recovery ?" I have no clue what that is. I use my laptop to watch dl content, YT, email and occasionally play games online.

"Is there anything on the Drive that is required as in personal files ?" I have quite a bit of pictures for writing, or drawing reference, and a lot of dl YT vids, movies, etc. I'm attempting to transfer it all to flash drives and cds.

"I would go with the Recovery, then remove all the Unwanted Programs via Add/Remove Programs, Install Windows Updates, get a free Antivirus."  Besides having two antivirus programs, what additional programs can I safely delete?"

Thanks to @Hav for the advice, and anyone else that can give me a heads-up.

"... I'm attempting to transfer it all to flash drives and cds..."  I highly recommend using Macrium Reflect [free version is fine] to make at least one if not two full images of your data partition [and your OS partition]  onto at least one if not two usb 1-3TB external platter-driven hard-drives.

When you use the recovery partition it will reformat the hdd and reinstall Windows.  The operating system will be the way it was when it was first started out of the box.  This means that it will remove all of the programs that were installed after it was first started, all pictures, video, documents, and updates.  This would be the best way to resolve this, it is quick and easy to do.

There is a good video which explains exactly how to use the recovery partition, you can watch it here.  You will want to do the System Recovery.

@Arachibutyrophobia,

I want to wait to do what you suggested until I can get everything off of here that I want to keep, so what can I do now to possibly give me a little more room, speed, etc. I'm trying to get all my personal info/pics/etc off the computer. And doing this will remove all passwords, etc.?

I'm also getting this in a box, like it's an install (at least it looks like it to me).  "Unable to download txt Spub.txt from 'image4.pubmatic.com' (I have NO idea what this is.)

@Saba, yeah I understand now, I'm going to be more careful next time.

Once you get all your Data saved externally as dc3 suggested , then assistance can be provided in a Factory Restore if need be , and then the removal of programs and bloatware from the Manufacturer etc , then setup antivirus , updates etc , then you can setup a Backup Image of the drive with a free backup program to an external drive , this will be up to date and save you from going through the Recovery Process again if needed as it is really { Old Data }.

Yes you will lose everything and passwords , so write your passwords down and keep safely stored offline.

The error you are getting - Unable to download txt Spub.txt...etc is related to a Torrent client on the system - see extracted post below.

You wont have to worry about that though if you go the route of a System Recovery.

Quite recently there’s been a very unusual thing going on, which seems to have affected mainly torrent users, causing a stir among them and raising many questions. The issue we have in mind is that of the so called ‘spug.txt’. According to the many reports, which are all consistent in this one aspect, from people using various torrent clients, they are all faced with the following error message:Unable to download spug.txt from image4.pubmatic.comNow, there’s been much speculation regarding this instance and users are mainly concerned with the fact whether this is a virus or other malware-related symptom. While we cannot confirm or deny these notions for certain, we are inclined to believe that the said error is not a virus. However, we do recommend that you scan your computer anyway, just to be on the safe side. As pointed out, this error is most likely linked to torrent trackers and has affected users with different types of these, such as BitTorent and uTorrent. Many have found that simply closing the torrent client results in both the download window and that with the “Unable to download spug.txt from image4.pubmatic.com” error disappearing, thus seemingly solving the problem.

If you go back and look at post #7 you will see that I have provided a link to a video showing the two ways that the Recovery Manager can be accessed and used.
