After updating a USB driver (3.0 host controller was completely missing), my computer reported a fatal system error and wouldn't start. I used system restore to get it back to a working state but since then my Synaptics touchpad isn't working at all. It doesn't seem to matter which version of the driver I use, I always get the same message:

"This device cannot start. (Code 10)
The device is not in a valid state to perform this request."

Any help would be appreciated!

Have you tried uninstalling the device entirely via Device Manager then doing a "Scan for New Hardware" (possibly with a reboot between)?

I've found that this sometimes works, sometimes not.
