I am subscribed to PIA (Private Internet Access) and interested in flashing new firmware onto my current router to use their network settings instead buying a pre-configured one if possible. I checked the DD-WRT Database and not completely sure if their revision(s) refer to mine [MI424WR]. My router revision is printed as what seems a 1 or in some fonts a capital "I" with no top and bottom horizontal lines. The database has my router with listed revisions from A to B (Link) thus I assume my revision is A. Any tips would be helpful, thank you.

Is this a leased router? From what I gathered any model version ABCD can be flashed. However, there are some serious things you need to know. The wiki for this device is here. What exactly are trying to achieve and gain by DDWRT?

Snap of wiki...

  • Coax is not supported and will be non functional.
  • Rev A units Wireless is unsupported read the MI424 thread here for info on radio replacements
  • Rev C & D wireless is fully functional.

Those are some serious negative points and reasons not to flash DDWRT to this unit.

1. All units Coax is not functional. Meaning the modem part of this router will not work. The unit will function only as a router and you will need a separate modem.

2. With rev A models the wireless does not function as it has a unsupported radio, but the radio can be re-soldered with one that they do support??

3. Rev C & D wireless is fully functional. Since you believe yours is Rev A that is a big hit & you will have no wifi.

4. Reading further into the wiki if by accident you brick the unit, your only recovery would be a JTAG method of recovery and out of all the units rev D does not have a JTAG for recovery.

I own the router; bought it from Verizon. My vpn provider uses DD-WRT for their preconfigured routers. I wanted to save money by flashing my current router with that firmware and apply their settings myself. But considering my revision is more than likely A I'll just buy a router from PIA. Thank you for the response.
