When I plug in my passport external drive my dell makes the sound like its recognized and I can hear it humming like its working, right? But it doesnt show up on my desktop to access it. But when I go to "my devices" in settings it says that "My passport Driver is unavailable". When I go to device manager, disk drives, my passport, it says "device is working properly" When I go to the driver information tab and click "Update driver" it says "the best driver software for your device is already installed"

We had a mac that I used to use this passport with and now I don't have it anymore, just a new DELL. Concerned I will have to reformat?

Any help would be appreciated! My husband is the computer man of the house and this is for a gift for him so I can't ask him for help :)

If the Passport was formatted for Mac, you will need to reformat it as NTFS for a Windows PC. Is there data on it you want to keep?
