I have a 500$ budget for 2 gaming PCs. I managed to fit (barely) these 2:
Brother's PC:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (CPU)
8GB DDR2
GTX 650 (GPU)
Asus motherboard that I don't remember the full name
Spire PEARL 550W (PSU)
A cheap Floston case that I don't remember the name (again)
Asus DVD reader/writer
500GB WD HDD

My PC:
Intel Xeon E5640 (I think)
A server motherboard
16 GB DDR3
GTX 970
And the rest is already built:
Corsair VS650
1TB HDD Seagate
Same Asus DVD reader/writer
Floston Winner (or Champion??)

And I wanted to ask if these are good enough to run most games, not necesarily maxed out 60 FPS. I know that the GTX 970 is pretty good, but that Xeon, is it good too?
Most of the parts are bought second hand and delivered with "check before pay" delivery.

Brother's PC: Seems quite cheap and OK.

Your PC: GTX970 is pretty bad in fact. Only 3.5GB fast memory (falsely advertised as 4GB card) and quite bad DX12 support. Also AMD Polaris is likely coming at same price range and will be much better. In case you don't want to wait, Radeon R9 380 4GB offers best bang for buck FullHD 60Hz gaming.

CPU seems to be almost same as i7-2600K but clock speed is much lower. So that would be around 30% slower than i7-2600K.

No, I game at 1360x768 and my brother games at 1024x768. I use Windows Vista SP2, so I don't really care about DirectX 12. And Vista doesn't support better drivers for AMD than 14.9. That 3.5 GB limit isn't a thing to worry on my resolution. And be sure I'll OC that Xeon to at least 3.4 GHz.

You think I'm joking? You're wrong! I can take a photo of my PC. I'm not joking. If you hate Vista, that's your problem. Please don't act like that.

And, if you take a look at my prevoius threads, you'll see I use an LG Flatron W1946. What resolution does that monitor use? 1360x768 that's the answer.

Don't really understand what happened here, I suspect some posts were deleted.

Windows Vista support ends april 2017. For that resolution GTX970 is overkill, much cheaper ones are equally fast. Even R9 380 is too much, from Nvidia perhaps GTX750.

I know that the support for Vista is almost done. But the thing is that I can't update Vista anyway. So, it's fine.

I want this GTX 970 because Shaders in Minecraft are crazy. They don't really care about the resolution. So, to get some FPS and no need to upgrade in the future 2 years, it's good.

I am at 1080p and my much weaker GTX 750ti can handle ultra shaders at max settings at 100fps. At that resolution the GTX 970 is way more than you need. Plus, I don't think Vista support for modern GPU's is that good.

The support is gonna be good enough. If not, there is Windows 8.1 in my PC and in my Windows installers collection.
And I don't want to upgrade the PCs too soon, maybe 2 years later.
