Can't get wifi signal in upstairs bedroom

I'm a guest in a house where the signal is weak or nonexistent.  I don't know the make or model of the modem downstairs.  Is there any kind of signal booster I can buy that will automatically pick up the needed information, and boost the signal up the stairs?

If you know the SSID and password yes, you can use something like this
