Having trouble installing Linux 17.2

I installed and set a password and wrote it down. Now when I login for the first time it would t take the password. So I tried to just do a reinstall all over again and it got half way through then failed and said something to do with the disk drive or disk. So now here I am with no idea how to get it working :( help please

Is this a dual boot machine? IE has it also got windows?

No it does not. It did have xp but I did a clean install.

Ok

 

In that case the easiest way is to boot your PC from Live media, Open Gparted, Delete the partitions and reformat the drive as ext 4 and try re installing.
