Firefox and IE will not open now

Desktop is an emachines T2698 w 1.5 gigs of ram and a 250 gig HD. Running Windows XP.   I have been having Firefox block things because of Adobe flash being outdated; however the Adobe update file would download but would never open and run.  So I tried to update Firefox and it said I needed Microsoft Net 2 before I could do the update.

 

I installed the Net 2 file last night but am not sure what happened.  Now neither Firefox or IE will open and I cannot get to the internet.

 

I have uninstalled Net 2 and I have run Systems Restore.  Systems Restore will not seem to make any change;  I have tried about five different dates.  

 

Need help.  How do I get Firefox or IE back?

Hi, lets check first for malware.

  • Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
  • Checkmark the following checkboxes:
    • Flush DNS
    • Report IE Proxy Settings
    • Reset IE Proxy Settings
    • Report FF Proxy Settings
    • Reset FF Proxy Settings
    • List content of Hosts
    • List IP configuration
    • List Winsock Entries
    • List last 10 Event Viewer log
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run. Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

  • Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool. Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
  • Click on the Scan button.

  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
  • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.

I assume these will download to a thumb drive?  I cannot get on the internet so I cannot download them on the desktop which is giving me trouble.  Is that what you suggest I do?:

 

It still communicates with the internet because I instructed Norton to update and it worked.  However I cannot get on the internet because neither Firefox nor Internet Explorer will work.  This only  happened after I downloaded Net2.

 

Will proceed.

OK - Eset apparently needs access to the internet.  It will not run when I copied it from my thumbdrive to my desktop; it kept asking if my proxy needed changing or something similar.   I also tried the zipped file but it says RAR has expired and it refuses to unzip the Eset file.  So I am not quite sure how to get Eset to run.  There was nothing found by Adwcleaner so there is no text file.  Here are the text files from MiniToolBox and JRT:  (Not sure why now but for some reason I cannot get the desktop to connect with the wireless network; that is a new problem.  Happened last night and by rebooting I got bars and connection to the network; now even after rebooting I am getting no bar and it says it cannot access the wireless network.)

Huzzah; I am able to get on the internet both with Firefox and IE after running MiniToolBox, AdwCleaner, JRT, and finally ESET.  ESET found two infections and the log is below.  I have spent the last two days with my network dropping out and then back in - but mainly not working.  Then I moved my desktop about four inches sideways and believe it or not the wireless network appeared.  Once I got on the internet I was able to run ESET.

 

So far I have 12.0Mbps and the signal strength is good and it appears to be working.  Good ole comcast.

 

Thanks for helping me on this one.  I still have no idea why Firefox and IE would not open after installing Net 2 but it is working again.

Yes.  I have been using a repeater for several years and this computer has been picking up the signal fine.  Not sure what has changed.  Right now I am getting 18 mbps and the signal strength is good. 

 

So for now it seems to be working.

Ty, there may some interference from some device nearby - that wasn't in the area before.  Have you tried another wifi channel to test?

No. Do not know how to do that.  Sometimes I get speeds at 48 but now it is running at 24mbps and then it will go down to 12.  Is this a problem?

 

Second - during this episode I note that System Restore refused to restore my computer at all - no matter what date I tried.  Is Sys Restore broken and if so how do I repair?

I'm not sure changing channels will boost the speed.  If internet is being dropped, back on, dropped, back on -- that was happening to me awhile back, changed channel - helped the "dropNadd," but not the speed.  How to change channel?  That will take somebody who knows really well your modem/router [name & model] and your modem/router's menu's wifi section.

Tweaking.com - Windows Repair All-In-One (Portable)

- Download Windows Repair All-In-One (Portable Version) from here.

- Extract tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to your Desktop.

- Disable all your antivirus and antimalware software - see how to do that here.
- Right click on QfBzvq1.png and select Run as Administrator (XP users just double click) to start Windows Repair All-In-One.
(Windows Vista/7/8 users: Accept UAC warning if it is enabled.)

- A window will appear. Click Step 2.

- Click the Open Pre-Scan button, then click Start Scan. Wait for Windows Repair to finish scanning.

- Depending on which error Windows Repair found, click Repair Reparse Point or Repair Environment Variable accordingly. When the button changes to "Done!", click the close button to return to Windows Repair.

- Go to Step 3, then click Check in the See If Check Disk Is Needed.

- If Windows Repair stated that errors are found, click Open Check Disk At Next Boot. Choose (/R) Fixes errors on the disk also locate bad sectors and recovers readable information, then click Add To Next Boot. Reboot the computer to let Windows check the disk.
