Sounds grander than it is - worked for 30 years for Commercial Companies developing and supporting industrial software.

Early days of computing were exciting and challenging. The introduction of all singing all dancing applications, one stop solutions (i.e. SAP) took the edge out of it for me so retired at the grand age of 55.

Soon got bored and now back in work, part time, and not IT related.

Like to keep computer work to hobbyist now - just as well as I cannot understand most of it.

If family members get in trouble I try and help them out obviously and if I cannot then Google can. Quite often the answer is found within these pages.

I have become a member though because I have identified an issue that, it would appear, there is no known answer - even Google, despite 100's of pages on the topic, has no solution to offer.

Got my interest.  Being the opposite or your profession, I was the hardware specialist.  Forty years Field Service Engineer.  Five years retired but still doing the same work for some of the same people but without a corporate partner to take profits.  Most clients are elderly and on fixed incomes (like me) and most are barter payments.  I only charge for parts cost and gas, as it's 150 miles round trip for parts.  Labor can be with barter goods.  I am among a circle of almost 100 barter partners for most food items and fresh produce.  Others are for car repairs, plumbing and landscaping.  I do most of the electrical, electronic stuff.  From TV cabling to phone lines, HDTV and home theater, DVRs and the PC part for laptops, desktops, tablets and WIFI setups.  There is one friend who is the busiest,  she does just the phones.  I seldom get to meet many except once a year for a pot luck dinner.
