Hi there,

I'm on Win 7 & 8.

Someone set up a network for me on my 2 different computers so I can copy files from one computer to another.

Now I have a new computer & I need to get the files from my laptop to there.

Can you give me instructions on how to create the network for the 3rd computer.

Thanks

If you are connecting computers and just need them to communicate internally with each other, you can set up a workgroup. if you want to set up multiple computers in that workgroup, you'll need a router, a switch, or one of the computers will need to have more than one network card. All the computers will have to be connected to the router/switch, or to each other. If you want to be able to reach the Internet, best to hook them up to a router.

Also, make sure you have network discovery enabled. Control Panel>Network and Sharing, click change advanced settings and enable network discovery.

In Network & Sharing Center, ensure sharing of files are clicked to on.  Also, Share any/all data folders via explorer.exe's left side menu.

If they set up the two computers using a Home Group, the simple answer to start is go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > HomeGroup.  Then it should show the home group password.  It will give you a password to use on the other computer that you go into the same way through the control panel > Network and Internet > join a homegroup.

You will get sharing options on what libraries you want to share; Music, Documents ect.  If you want to edit on each computer look for the sharing options on top of the folder and make sure "Read/Write" is enabled.

Also remember all computers must be on to use this sharing method.

Thanks guys

Someone else helped me. The Home Group didn't work, so we just did file sharing which is really all that was needed.

Be well :)
