Extremely Slow Shutdown Process

I have a Dell Dimension 3GHz/3GHz Dual CPU with 1 gig RAM and a few other bells and whistles, the computer is approximately one year old. For a few months now I've noticed extremely drawn out shutdowns. After clicking Shutdown from the start menu, I notice a few applications closing, the hard drive is active, and then nothing. The application bar and desktop are still active, I can open applications...it's like the shutdown process was paused. Then I'll walk away and come back ten minutes later and its finally rebooting. This is extremely inconvenient for me whenever I update certain programs that require reboot. I take pretty good care of this PC, making sure my norton definitions and other symantec software is up to date, I run Spybot and Adaware regularly, and clean out old files often. Anyone have a good place to start on solving this issue? Thanks in advance

You should also look in Event Viewer for clues:

I suspect if you look in the application event logs, you'll see a message saying something like this:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 8/5/2006
Time: 5:36:48 PM
Windows saved user [computer identity/user name] registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
This is also caused by logging off while background services are still running.

In order to see what is still up, press Ctrl + Alt + Del This will call up the task manager. Click on the process tab, and I'll bet you'll see you have at least 5 background processes related to security running.

I've had this problem before, and frequently, when I used Symantec. Here's what you can do:

Instead of hitting the restart button immediately, instead:

:) close all web pages, mail programs, and any other internet connected program.
:thumbsup: manually disconnect from the internet
:flowers: individually close all applications except security and, if there is one, the program requesting the restart
:inlove: one by one shut down the security programs. Wait for each to finish shutting down before going to the next. You will be able to see the processes going away in the task manager.
:cool: now hit the restart button, and shut down will go quite quickly. The only time it won't is if there will be significant program changing going on in the background during shutdown.

Do not hit "end process" in the task manager as this could make your programs unstable.

When I follow this process, even when logging off normally, I don't receive that error message. If I leave the security systems on when I log off, I do receive that error message.

awesome, thanks for the help, i'll try that next time. do i need to repeat that process every time to achieve faster shutdowns or is this a one-time only process? because with all that hassle, it might be just as practical to let the computer shut everything down on its own just the way it is now.

It wouldn't hurt too follow through on TmacK's suggestions, especially if my suggestion doesn't work.

By the way, my suggestion is not a one-time fix, but I've had to do it at times when the computer wouldn't restart at all! My method is the most stable way of logging off that I am aware of.

One thing that may be affecting your startup and shutdown times is that you may have a lot of unnecessary aps running in the background.

I recommend Startup Inspector to manage your startup menu.

Startup Inspector (manages startup menu – helps you identify aps in the startup menu so you can disable unnecessary programs from running in the background when they are not needed)


Startup Monitor (a small freeware ap available on the same page to notify you and require your permission for any program to add itself to your startup menu)


Uncheck aps such as cd burning programs, Realplayer, instant messengers, office programs, Adobe, etc -any ap you do not normally use every time the computer starts.
Make sure you do not disable anti-virus, anti-malware and firewall aps.
