Hi,

I have a customer with a computer that got infected with multiple trojans. I have attached the hijack log below.

There are several symptoms. The Windows firewall is disabled and can't be restarted. Norton Antivirus protection gets turned off at every reboot. Outlook Express works, but takes nearly a minute to initialize. The top items in Google searches are redirected to different sites. And that's just what I can see.

I looked up a few of the items in the hijack log and they appear to be trojans. Is there a way to automatically analyze the entire log to find the items that need to be removed? Can I use the HijackThis program to remove any of these or do I have to it manually. Apparently Ad-Aware and Spybot don't see these or they are also corrupted.

Any help is appreciated. Here is the log:

You have a customer? Are you in the IT business?

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Thank you.

I'm a management consultant but people seem to think I know about IT issues. Is that a problem here in this forum?

That seemed to help a lot. The Google symptom is cleared up, Outlook Express initializes quickly and Spybot can run normally (and detected several items).

Here is the updated Hijackthis log and the Fixwareout report.

No, not at all. I was just curious.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Hi Buckeye,

Thanks again. I followed the instructions and removed more problems with HijackThis. I installed Ewido and it found another couple of bad things. I am including the logs below.

All the symptoms seem to be gone except one that might not be a symptom but just a Windows problem. When I try to open the Windows Firewall on the Controll panel I get a message that says: "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows canot display Windows Firewall settings." Other than that the computer is running pretty well now.

Here is the latest HijackThis log:

Click Start -> Run -> services.msc
Locate Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service and make sure it is started.
Startup type should be set to Automatic.

Then check your firewall.
Let me know what you find here.

Thanks again,

I checked for the Windows Firewall service and it wasn't there. I search the Microsoft KB and found out how to reinstall it. It is now back and working.

Here is the new HijackThis uninstall log you requested.

Yeah, we're just about done.

Please click Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall these programs:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Viewpoint Media Player

The current version of Java can be downloaded from Sun here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8' and press the 'Download' button. On the new web page, click the 'Accept License Agreement' button. Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform area just below the Accept button.
