if you want a really good free alternative you could try 7 Zip.

Letter of the law:  after trial period, either remove it or buy the license.  :)

Yes ,that,s exactly right...i tried WinRa while back and its ok,but i honestly prefer 7 Zip,its flawless.

can I make it a default apps by file type

Yes of course,i use it as my default..go to extract a zipped folder or Ra and just - Open with - Browse - Select 7 Zip and check - Always use this program for files of this type.

If  you want to really beef up your extraction arsenal Peazip is a great utility which will also extract tz and other hard to use formats, but is very easy to use.

Ok so you would choose 7zFM.exe,..3rd  from the top..that should open the main executable extractor.

Think thats right cos im using the portable one which looks slightly different.

Peazip  would be the  same process, look for peazip.exe and choose that.

I run Peazip from a flashdrive i dont have to hand for a closer look, but choosing the wrong one wont do any harm,it just wont work..it,ll be the one marked Application on the right if you look in list mode.

If you happen to click on the wrong one just choose again.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

7z would be my recommendation, the only thing winrar does which 7z does not is MAKE rar files. 7z can extract them with no problem, and any time you need to compress files for yourself you can use windows built in zip file making tool or 7z's 7z or zip file making tool. You can download 7z here:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/7-zip-for-windows/

What do you mean? What precisely do you want, an explanation walking you through the installation of the program? It's so many years ago I installed it that I don't honestly remember how that went. Or do you want pictures of what the user interface is like once it's installed?
