I have a HP Pavilion with Windows 8.1 and I use Mozilla Firefox and BitDefender free antivirus.

Malware screening and general system cleanup have all been done (many thanks satchfan).

When I connect to my ISP it starts up ok, then later hangs, is slow to download or simply can't access the website.

The problem solves itself when I log off and relog on with my ISP but only temporarily.

Any suggestions?

Does not appear you are using a router but just a wireless modem since your ipconfig gives a public ip address not a private one. That puts you raw on the internet which is not advisable. what make/model equipment are you wirelessly connecting to?

Second issue is you have really poor performance bandwidth/isp

1   367 ms   388 ms   358 ms  172.18.209.1
  2   336 ms   407 ms   448 ms  172.18.65.177

What also is strange is you have a public ip but your first two hops in the ISP network are private ip in the 172 subnet.

Lets see the following:

go to ipchicken.com.  Does the ip address it says you have match the one in the ipconfig?

second go to speedtest.net and run a broadband test and post the results for review.

Download speed = 5.66 Mbps  Upload speed = 0.35 Mbps

That's to my ISP Telstra  121.212.18.16

IP Chicken shows...

Name Address: 121.212.18.16
Remote Port: 26554
Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; Win64; x64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.0

WhoIs shows up the following details for the first internet addresses:

NetRange:       172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
CIDR:           172.16.0.0/12
NetName:        PRIVATE-ADDRESS-BBLK-RFC1918-IANA-RESERVED
NetHandle:      NET-172-16-0-0-1
Parent:         NET172 (NET-172-0-0-0-0)
NetType:        IANA Special Use
OriginAS:
Organization:   Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)
RegDate:        1994-03-15
Updated:        2013-08-30
Comment:        These addresses are in use by many millions of independently operated networks, which might be as small as a single computer connected to a home gateway, and are automatically configured in hundreds of millions of devices.  They are only intended for use within a private context  and traffic that needs to cross the Internet will need to use a different, unique address.

Thanks for your help Wand3r3r.

5.66 Mbps  Upload speed = 0.35 Mbps

You have less than a dialup modem for bandwidth. Contact your isp and request a line and modem check.

Your connection might work for checking mail but nothing beyond that.

Wand3r3r,

You are exactly right. I have been in contact with my ISP and they are working with me to solve the problem. I think we can close the thread at this point.

My sincere thanks. Cheers.
