I have a Windows 8.1 computer that had no trouble getting updates. After two hours waiting on the Windows 7 laptop I finally gave up and disabled the Windows Update Service.

Edit: CPU and Fan activity back to normal. Microsoft has some serious issues.

I had no problem with the lone XP update via Windows Update...processed routinely.

This morning, I tried to update my Win 7 install...30 mins of nothing regarding checking.  Turned off automatic updates via the Windows Update "Change Settings" button, rebooted.  Same nothing.  Ran the re-register/reset script from sevenforms.com, rebooted...same old nothing on checking for updates.

This is irritating only because of the small mentality it reflects in terms of inconveniencing those users who have chosen to stay with Win 7.

Initiated update check on my Win 7 laptop, left system alone for about an hour...list of critcal updates resulted which are installing now.

See this thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/608538/windows-7-clean-install/

Just did a reinstall of Win7 2 days ago. Followed the procedures in the above thread & less than

20 minutes later had a boatload of updates ready to install.

Do the IE11 update first.

I never make the same mistake twice....I always make it 5 or 6 times just to be sure!
