I have Win 98 SE. My wordpad works fine but one particular doc. I'm trying to open from a trusted website. It's not a large doc. and here's the error message I receive. Any help appreciated. Thank you.

It seems Wordpad will only open .doc files created in Word 6.0 format, only.
Anything later (which you probably downloaded) wouldn't open properly, giving you that error message.
This person found a workaround that worked.
The link he provided no longer works, but the last post recommends a program that will.
Wordpad problem

OpenOffice should also work.

This is a Microsoft article, that also gives a couple of workarounds:
You experience problems when you open a Word 2000 document in WordPad
