What do you mean by "more durable"?  Whether it has more read/write cycles or whether it can take some banging?  On a $/GB basis, a hard drive is cheaper than a flash drive.  A flash drive has a limited amount of read/write cycles but it can take rougher treatment.  A hard drive theoretically has infinite read/write cycles but most likely won't survive a fall.  Both flash drives and hard drives will die sooner or later.

Maybe consider:  two twin usb external hard-drives; each with the identical folders/files.  If/when one goes, the other probably is aok.  And, if you travel some, two twin 128GB or 256GB usb flash drives -- for the road.
