My hosts file grew to 900mb because of a n00b programming mistake. This caused the internet to be unusable. When I try to edit/delete it, it says Cryptographic Services is using it.

How do I fix this?

TIA

You can try editing while in Safe Mode. You can try stopping the crytographic service from running while editing the hosts file....be sure to turn it back on

Services - Start, Stop, and Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

You can try replacing the host file using a flash drive to transfer the program mentioned in below instructions.

Replace your current HOSTS file with a tweaked one, as the MVPS Host file, that restricts access to known bad sites improving your security.
It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting the attempted connections to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer.

To do it:

  • Download hosts.zip and save it to your desktop
  • Right click the file you just downloaded on your desktop and select => Extract to "hosts\"
  • In the hosts folder on your desktop, double click on mvps.bat file to run the program
  • A prompt will appear, press any key to continue

I don't know if system restore backs up the host file or not. I would try it on my computer. Up to you to try it on yours.

I just attempted to find and open my Windows Host file using Linux and mounting Windows. I had no problem doing that.

Any chance you have a Linux Live distro on a DVD, CD or Flash Drive?

I have to wonder if there's something malicious on your system.

Manipulating the HOSTS file is a simple matter:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/hosts-file-in-windows

You may want to try some of these free scans:

Could you be infected?  It's possible that malware has corrupted your current protection, so please try a couple of these, independent scans (from this link: https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA15-286A ).  This is in case your current protection is compromised by malware and giving false results:

           F-Secure
           https://www.f-secure.com/en/web/home_global/online-scanner (link is external)

           McAfee
           http://www.mcafee.com/uk/downloads/free-tools/stinger.aspx (link is external)

           Microsoft
           http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx (link is external)

           Sophos
           https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/virus-removal-tool.aspx (link is external)

           Trend Micro
           http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ (link is external)

The above are examples only and do not constitute an exhaustive list. The U.S. Government does not endorse or support any particular product or vendor.
If you do find infections, I'd suggest posting over in the Am I Infected forum to ensure that all the bad stuff has been removed:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/
Please read the pinned topics at the top of the forum for instructions on how to post there.

Try using .zip rather than .7z
