When I try and start IE exporer, or use another shortcut/icon on the desktop, nothing will work. The internet explorer opens briefly, then automatically shuts down.

NOTE: This is a registry edit. If you're not comfortable with working in the registry, DO NOT ATTEMPT.
Improper changes to the registry could render your computer inoperable.
Remember to backup the registry before making any changes.
Instructions, on how to do that, can be found here:

Gave it a go, and nothing changed. I'm beginning to suspect that it may be just a setting somewhere

Right click an icon, and select Properties.
Under the Shortcut tab, is the icon pointing to the correct program?

Try creating a new desktop icon, and see if it works.

I have done that very thing first up. It seems to be pointing to the right program. The problem is that when I try and go straight into program files and even try the .exe files, some of them will work for a split second, then vanish, while others won't work at all. This seems to be all encompassing. Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and patience.

Do you iknow exactly when this problem began?

If you do, use Windows System Restore to revert your system to a previous system state.
To access system restore:

start/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore

Choose a date from before the problem began.

See if anything here might help:

if you have yahoo toolbar installed, uninstall it and all should be fine again... at least with Internet Explorer

it's the toolbar that seems to be the problem... just go to "add and remove" programmes and delete it from there.

Also could be account corruption so i would also try to create a new account if the yahoo toolbar does not help. If so then it is easy enough to trasfer data
