I have been having trouble with this computer for a while. I used Adw Cleaner and Norton to clean up what I could and problems have been resurfacing and getting worse.  At first, my browser was being hijacked and I was getting pop up messages that said I had the Zeus Virus (not a virus program but a browser popup) and needed to call microsoft at a given 800 number etc while the computer used text to speech to give me lengthy warnings.  Adw Cleaner seemed to remove all of that nonsense.  At the time one of the programs found a malware called mysearch.com.  Now I am not having the exact same problem but my browsers (all of them) have been infected and will not open any web pages.  Norton says it is SearchProtect that I am infected with. I found removal instructions to make sure it is entirely gone, but cannot find any processes or programs with the given names to get rid of.  I tried to reset Firefox and now it says my profile is missing and wont open while Chrome is opening to nav.brotstation.com despite google being the homepage, but still nothing loads at all and the page stays blank.  I disabled IE altogether thinking that might help since nobody even uses it.  The computer seems to have deeper problems as some things wont run. I can't get Malwarebytes to open at all (it asks if I want to allow Malwarebytes to change things then never opens.)  It opens several instances of the same program like my Warcraft game and I have to manually close multiples of the same program causing the pc to be sluggish.  Windows Explorer keeps crashing and programs are crashing.  The computer sometimes reboots itself.  There has been a lot of strange behavior.  I kept getting an error about the Interactive services detection after every reboot.  When I went to disable it, initially I got an error that said a thread could not be created.  I finally disabled the interactive services after a reboot.  I tried scanning with Sophos and it didn't find anything so I installed Norton and only caught the SearchProtect.  It supposedly dealt with that although I still do not have any internet browser working and obviously have other problems.  I need an expert to tell me what to do and how so I can make sure to get this completely clear once and for all.

Thanks,

Beth

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

I have done as much as I could.  I had to run the Mini Toolbox and MBAR in safe mode.  I cannot update the definitions for MBAR, but finally got it to run.  I spent hours waiting for it to update, but it kept freezing up.  MBAM will still not open no matter what I do. I have tried to run as admin and in safe mode, but it never actually opens. I cant even get the uninstall to work in order to get a clean install and try again.  I'm pretty sure whatever is on the computer is blocking the MBAM GUI from opening when I click on it.  Here are my logs:

I dont know if it matters or not, but my 16yr old son is into some crappy hacking networks and plays with these people so it is entirely possible that he has downloaded something horrible.  He said he removed a dark comet rat off the computer. I am unsure about his removal capabilities so that might be part of the problem.

MBAR detected something but we're not allowed to run MBAR fixes in this forum.

Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
