My computer has been black screening lately while playing games.  Has happened on FFXIV, minecraft, TF2, L4D2.

I can still here audio which is weird.  If I'm in TS3 I can still press my mouse 3 button and can talk and hear with people in the TS.  I tried typing in chat while black screened in FFXIV but people said they couldn't see what I typed.

This has been happening the last few months with different video drivers. Attached is the rig I built about 7 years ago the only thing I have replaced is the video card and the memory which are now as follows:

EVGA 025-P3-1579-AR GeForce GTX 570 (Fermi) HD 2560MB 320-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

2 x Dominator® — 6GB Triple Channel DDR3 Memory Kit (TR3X6G1600C8D) (Total 12gb)

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi man :) I am more of an AMD fan but it looks like you have a pretty nice rig there :) If we can get a little more information, it will help us get to the bottom of your problem.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
  • List Restore Points
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Once we get that info, we can get started :)

Looking through your installed programs, you seem to have multiple "PDF Printer" programs (doPDF and novaPDF). That is unnecessary, and you should probably remove one of the two. Not done looking at the log, just wanted to drop a suggestion while I was at it.

Appreciate it! Yea I just like to be able to print to PDF :P. I'll get rid of one.

Edit: They are both from Softland, looks like one is the program and one is the driver maybe?

Maybe, but you should only need the driver in that case...

Ok, I just went ahead and uninstalled.  Also I installed CPUID HWMonitor to see if I can check my temps while gaming.

Definitely something that might be a good idea especially if you have multiple monitors. I know you said your CPU is @ stock, but is anything else OC'd?

Nothing else is OC'd

Edit: Is my PSU sufficient for the system?

Your PSU should be fine. I'm somewhat worried about the GPU you have, considering its age.

You did notice I don't have the GTX 295 anymore but upgraded to a 570?  You think it's just giving out and giving me the black screen? I was thinking about building a new one since this thing is 7 years old but I'm reading about how it might be better to hold off a bit? Guess there is a new generation of graphics cards on the way or something.

New gen of GPUs conning, and also a new AMD CPU line coming soon. I did miss that you had upgraded, but the new card is still old enough to potentially have problems.

Try stress testing your GPU with something like Furmark for a hour or so and seeing if the issue surfaces.

In case you need a download link:
here's one. Running it in stress test mode will loop continuously, so just stop it when you feel like it. Note that it will make your GPU warmer than it would be normally, so make so you have good ventilation :)
