Invision Power Service has ended support for 3.4.x versions of the forums, leaving the forum software vulnerable to future hacks and backdoors.

The forum should be updated to 4.1.x as it's much smoother, faster, and better.

Thoughts?

Malwarebytes Forums upgraded to 4.1 and I can tell you that it's far from being what the helpers here want. If BC is to upgrade to IPS 4.1, the helpers will be in for a good week of confusion at least, I can tell you that.

That might be true, but the support for this software has ended, and there are multiple sites which got XSS backdoors in them. In the future, someone will find a backdoor and use it, and no one is going to patch it.

IPB 3.4 is still supported until 2017, it is not yet unsupported.

March 1, 2016 - End of advanced technical support and development. Basic / limited technical support will continue.

June 1, 2016 - End of all technical support. Only security updates will be provided.

April 1, 2017 - Complete product End of Life (EOL)

It's March 20 now, and they're starting to kill it slowly.

Due to the complex number of custom modifications that have been implemented by the admins on the forum, it is a large task to update it.

While I cannot speak for the admins as to if they are working on updating or not, I am sure that support for this forums software and the security of the forum as a whole is very well handled.

Hi:

I am just a home user & longtime forum volunteer at MBAM forum (different handle).

So, I cannot speak to the security considerations or coding concerns.

I echo @Aura's observations that the move (I cannot call it an "upgrade" with sincerity) has "fixed" many things that were not broken and has likewise broken many, many things that -- by all accounts -- cannot be fixed.

This goes well beyond minor inconveniences and work flow and workarounds.

There are serious functional deficiencies, especially for volunteers, staff and malware helpers who rely on "canned" and BBCode, among other problems.

The new software seems better suited to a dating site than to a computer help forum.

The publisher seems to be "unable" to fix many of large and small regressions and UI/UX issues.

If I were the folks running this forum (which operates much the same as MBAM forum, but at an even higher volume), I would wait as long as possible for IPS to fix what they "can" in a future build before upgrading here.

JMHO and not worth 2 cents,

MM

As your quote shows security updates will be provided until April 1, 2017. There's an entire year left before the support for the software ends. End of development only means that no new features will be introduced anymore. Bug fixes are still being provided. It is absolutely safe to use this version of IPB instead of IPB 4.1.

I also echo what others have said, IPB 4.1 is horrible. It completely breaks work flow on support forums and I'd push the upgrade back as long as safely possible in the hope that IP will come to their sense and provide the currently available features in 3.4 in 4.1 as well.
