Hello,

The problem: Very long wait times (up to 3 minutes) with any of the following actions:

--Waking up computer (screensaver stays on screen)

--Opening any program

--Opening a new window in IE 10 or Google Chrome

--Any mouse click.

Often see this error in lower left of screen:  "waiting for cache..."

Often see this error when responding to a window:  "(Not Responding)"

Sometimes see this error when clicking on a link opens a new window in Google Chrome:  "Page Unresponsive   The following page has become unresponsive.  You can wait for it to become responsive or kill it."

While these problems are happening the HD makes intermittent clicks (once very 1.5 or 2 seconds), eventually followed by a burst of disk access activity, and then sometimes the problem resolves.

All of these issues are temporary BUT RECURRENT--if I wait 2-4 mins the machine may become responsive again, but only for a short time.  Sometimes it happens with every mouse click or other action, so that 3 mins of work can take 40 minutes.  No crashes or permanent freezes or BSOD.

I have a Gateway desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64-bit Operating System, Intel Core i3 CPU (dual core 2.93 MHZ processors), running 6 GB RAM (total capacity of 8 GB).  I have a subscription to Norton 360 and use it.  I just ran MTB and uses Speccy to publish a screenshot:  http://speccy.piriform.com/results/D5gb0yaQQa6AwF6QHnYdMBi

When having these problems Windows Task Manager shows I have free Physical Memory of up to 2 MB.  The attached screenshot is an example.  I generally run only a web browser, and I do no gaming.  Six months ago I had Win7 re-installed (to resolve even worse problems), but this problem only appeared in the last couple of months.

Here are some steps I've taken recently, in chronological order (besides scanning BC forums for similar problems):

--deleted some recently installed programs

--Installed and ran MyTurboPC (and keep running it every few days)

--Updated Java

--Stopped using IE 10 and switched to Google Chrome as my preferred browser.

--Installed and ran AdW Cleaner.

--Installed and ran Destroy Windows Spying (DWS_Lite.exe)

Does this sound like an issue of insufficient RAM?

Many thanks.

I see hard drive errors, so I run the check to scan for and attempt to fix any bad sectors.  Open Windows Explorer, right-click C: and click Properties.  Then click the Tools tab and click Check.  Click the option to scan for bad sectors.  Also I see a lot of tasks running.  I'd start MSCONFIG and click the Startup tab (Note: avoid the other tabs).  There you can uncheck anything except your antivirus program.  The fewer things you have starting when you boot, the better your performance will be.

 Good luck.

Make regular full system backups or you'll be sorry sooner or later.

Please...uninstall MyTurboPC and follow that with running the chkdsk /r command.  Follow that with running the sfc /scannow command.

Chkdsk From Command Prompt, Win 7 - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/496613/contextmenu-is-causing-explorerexe-to-crash/?p=3067880

Run sfc scannow command prompt, Aura - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/579699/missing-uxthemedll-file/?p=3736491

Run GSmartControl

http://gsmartcontrol.sourceforge.net/home/index.php/Downloads

And see how much red(-ish) lines show up in the "Attributes" tab. I expect to see - at least - 2 red lines to show up.

Thanks very much for all the help.  So far I have run CHKDSK, and it is still running 16 hours later.  However it does appear to have replaced some bad sectors.  I will post again once it has completed and I've had a chance to run sfc /scannow, MSCONFIG, GSmartControl, and HDD diagnostics.

To run chkdsk /r on a 1TB partition/drive normally takes me about 3 hours or so.

I would forego running sfc /scannow and run a hard drive diagnostic once the chkdsk /r completes, since the possibility of drive problems needs verification/refutation.

Thanks Louis.  I completed chkdsk /r and the computer restarted.  Is there a log I can post?
Then I ran GSmartControl.  The Attributes tab shows two items in red (Current Pending Sector Count, and Offline Uncorrectable), and below is the log.  I don't know what any of these means, so I would be grateful for any suggestions.  Thanks!

I ran SeaTools for DOS, LONG test and it reports that the drive "failed the Long Test".  Here is the log (had to write it down bcs I don't have a floppy disk drive to save it to):

Device 0 is ATA device WDCWD10EADS- 22MB0 WD-WCAV56980160 On Intel 5 Series

Max Native Address 1953525167

Device is 48 bit Addressed - Number of LBAs 1953525167 ( 1000.205 GB )

This drive supports Security Features

SMART is supported and ENABLED

SMART Has Not Been Tripped

DST Is Supported

Logging Feature Set Is Supported

POH 20409

Started Long Test 3/23/2016 @ 9:26.12

Long Test Failed 3/23/2016 @ 12:09.29

At the main SEA TOOLS screen, the lower window also contained this text:

The drive is not responding to commands.  Check cables and drive power connection.

Is it really worth it to check the cables and drive power connection?  Or should I assume that I just have bad sectors that are unrepairable?

Thanks again for all the help.

Steve

Appears that your current hard drive is failing.  Hopefully, you have made/stored routine backups.

If no backups, I suggest that you immediately invest time/energy into moving all valued data files to another drive.  Once that is done, then you can attempt cloning the current hard drive to a new drive, in a last effort to save any programs installed  and your current Windows install.

Thanks very much.  Not the news I wanted to hear, but I am VERY glad to know what the cause of the problems is.  Fortunatley I do have good backups and should be able to get a new drive installed soon.

Thanks again to all of the commentors for the very valuable help!
