Hello,

my notebook OS freezes when running the photo software RawTherapee 4.2.880. No actions like noise reduction are required. Only mouse movements are enough, sometimes after 1 minute, sometimes after 10 minutes.

The problem occurs when running RawTherapee directly or even in a Windows 10 pro VM under VirtualBox. That meens, using a VM is no protection against the MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION.

I tried moving the complete VM to another PC (Dell T20 with XEON E3-1225v3 CPU and VirtualBox on OpenSUSE). No problem to run RawTherapee here.

I had no other trouble with my notebook since 4 months yet.

Checked 32 GByte RAM with memtest86 without any problem.

The most common reason for these errors is a hardware problem.

Please start with these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

Your UEFI/BIOS (version 5.011) dates from 2015.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  This is just in case there has been a recent update.

Only 10 Windows Update hotfixes installed.  Most build 10586 (TH2/1511) systems have more than this.  Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available Windows Updates.
The actual number is not important.  Rather it's important that you checked manually, installed any available updates, and didn't experience any errors when checking or updating.

You have 3 hard drives.  What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

These devices have issues in Device Manager:

Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Virtual Miniport Adapter for Windows x64    ROOT\NET\0002    Das Gerät wurde deaktiviert.
Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64-bit Windows    ROOT\NET\0003    Das Gerät wurde deaktiviert.

If not needed, please uninstall the Cisco software.

If needed, please re-enable the devices, then update them to the latest available W10 compatible version.  Then, if so desired, feel free to disable them again.

Please note that several of the oldest drivers in the memory dumps are related to the Cisco software.

Also, another old driver is related to the Hotkey program

Please uninstall it in order to test it.

Finally, the rpwkmdrv.sys driver concerns me.

It is listed as a Rapoo wireless device driver, yet there is no solid reference to it when searching the web for it.

It's also an older driver, so it may have problems with some systems

Most references are related to malware - so I suggest performaing anti-malware scans:

Could you be infected?  It's possible that malware has corrupted your current protection, so please try a couple of these, independent scans (from this link: https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA15-286A ).  This is in case your current protection is compromised by malware and giving false results:

           F-Secure
           https://www.f-secure.com/en/web/home_global/online-scanner (link is external)

           McAfee
           http://www.mcafee.com/uk/downloads/free-tools/stinger.aspx (link is external)

           Microsoft
           http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx (link is external)

           Sophos

           Trend Micro
           http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ (link is external)

The above are examples only and do not constitute an exhaustive list. The U.S. Government does not endorse or support any particular product or vendor.
If you do find infections, I'd suggest posting over in the Am I Infected forum to ensure that all the bad stuff has been removed:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/
Please read the pinned topics at the top of the forum for instructions on how to post there.

Would You explain, which 3 tests You mean, please?

There are more than 3 tests.

I did Prime 95 test (specialy to detect Skylake bug) - no problem.

I did memtest86 7 hours - no problem.

I found this under Your link:

Top of the list
Memory diag (bootable)
Hard Drive diag (bootable)
AntiMalware tests
Rescue disks (bootable)

Video 1 (Furmark)
Prime95
Video 2 (5 tests)

>Finally, the rpwkmdrv.sys driver concerns me.

>It is listed as a Rapoo wireless device driver, yet there is no solid reference to it when searching the web for it.

>It's also an older driver, so it may have problems with some systems

>Most references are related to malware - so I suggest performaing anti-malware scans:

I updated this driver after first BSOD. Before I use the mouse without any driver.

I even checked without mouse (only touch pad, plugged receiver out).

Would You recomment not to use Repoo devices?

Repoo are low cost devices that are sold a lot in germany.

regards,

Jo

I suggest that you run all of the hardware tests in my link.

If concerned about the CPU; run Prime95 with the Small FFT's test and the Large FFT's test. (in addition to the CPU tests at the end)
I suggest the Blend test also, as it tests the RAM differently from MemTest

Who is Schenker and why would they be giving a Go! for it?  Is this the company that owns the computer that you're using?

> Your UEFI/BIOS (version 5.011) dates from 2015.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  This is just in case there has been a recent update.

That's what I will check after Schenker gives a Go! for it.

We may have language difficulties, but we can work through them.

If you don't understand my English, please ask me to rephrase it.  Ich spreche sehr wenig Deutsch (from Google :0)

Have I missed replying to any of your questions?

As for the Repoo device, see if you can update the drivers.

I don't see any problem with the Repoo driver except for it's age (it is a bit older than W10)

But that is not enough reason to stop using it at this time.

Once the things that I asked you to do are completed, then we wait to see if the problems return.

It is important that you do ALL of the diagnostics.

Good luck!

Thank You for replying.

I scanned my system with all anti-malware tools.

I activated Cisco AnyConnect, because I use the VPN to log into IBM partner world.

for further tests I deinstalled Hotkey (which is called ControlCenter on my system and was delivered with the notebook).

>As for the Repoo device, see if you can update the drivers.

I started Windows update procedure which said "Die optimale Treibersoftware für das Gerät ist bereits installiert"

There are no newer drivers on the website. I deinstalled Rp Wireless Device, plugged off. Use touchpad instead.

After all activities, starting RawTherapee leads to BSOD after some minutes.

Furmark, Prime95, Video Memory Stress Test run without problem. CPU temperatur seams well controlled. To proof that I use HwiNFO64.

IntelProcessor Diagnostic tool itsself has a bug. It show 16 GB of memory, but I have 32 GB installed.  (hardcopy1)

IMC fails. So I disabled IMC test. Then it runs through the other tests. (hardcopy2)

Further tests (memtestcl) will follow in the evening.

So I am asking: Is that the typical behaviour of the Broadwell bug? I read about its SpeedStep - issues in other foren, that could be fixed by microcode - updates. So I will ask the notebook manufacturer (Schenker) about the BIOS update.

Regards,

Jo

Back again.

While testing Prime95 which loads the CPU up to 100% I found that RawTherapee works fine during an hour!

I stopped Prime95 and made an new energy planning entry (whatever the tranlation of "Energiesparplan" is).

Here I set the minimum CPU frequency in the extended settings to 100% - avoiding down stepping to 800 MHz.

Voila! No BSOD :-)

I do really not  understand why stepping up/down is no problem for months, but running a special program results in a crash within minutes.

May be the BIOS update contains the microcode that solves the problem. But will then SpeedStep be disabled for ever?

That would reduce the battery runtime of my notebook. Or not?

Regards,

Jo

Way, way beyond my abilities.
I'd suggest posting over in the Internal Hardware forums to discuss this with the hardware experts there:    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/7/internal-hardware/
