Adware Cleaner - Can't Open Chrome or Firefox

I ran Adwcleaner and I could not open Chrome or Firefox (but explorer still works).  I removed chrome, but it now won't let me download it.  It tells me that its unable to connect to the internet and that if I am using a firewall, to please whitelist GoogleUpdate.exe.  However, internet is working fine with explorer.  What do I do?                  
 

I don't know if this has to do with the same issue, but I uninstalled by McAfee Security to see if it was the issue, and now when I am trying to reinstall it, it is stating that the software cannot continue because there is a problem with my internet connection, however as I stated I am able to use internet explorer fine

I am sorry to hear of the issues you are having with your computer. What security software, in particular, firewall, do you have installed and active on your computer? Did you try "whitelisting" GoogleUpdate.exe in your firewall, as suggested?

I can help you rule out, or confirm, a malware infection, so let's start there, since you posted here in the "Am I Infected? What Do I Do?" Forum. Is there any reason why you suspect a malware infection, other than some apps reporting that they cannot access the Internet? Depending on how your firewall is configured, it could be blocking access.

Let's start with a few preliminary scans. I want to look for malware and also examine your computer configuration, if that is alright with you.
 
 

:step1: ESET Online Scanner using Internet Explorer:

Note 1: These instructions are for Internet Explorer only! If you're using Chrome or Firefox, you will need to download and install the ESET Smart Installer tool before it can scan. See instructions here.
Note 2: You will need to disable your currently installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be found here.

* Click this link to open ESET OnlineScan.
* Place a checkmark next to "Yes, I accept the Terms of Use", then click the greenstart.png button.
* When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
* In the new window that opens, tic the radio button next to Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications.
* Then click "Advanced settings", and make sure there is a checkmark next to only the following items (uncheck everything else):

  • Remove found threats
  • Scan archives
  • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
  • Enable Anti-Stealth technology

* Then click the shieldstart.png button and ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
* When the scan completes, click List Found Threats (only if anything is found).
* Then click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
* Click back.png, then click finish.png to exit ESET Online Scanner.

Don't forget to re-enable your antivirus when finished!



:step2: Download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to your desktop. :step3:

  • Double-click mbam-setup-2.2.*.****.exe and follow the prompts to install the program ( * = program version numbers may vary - always get the latest version).
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
  • Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
  • A 14 day trial of the Premium features is pre-selected. You may deselect this if you wish, and it will not diminish the scanning and removal capabilities of the program.
  • Click Finish.
  • On the Dashboard, click the 'Update Now >>' link
  • After the update completes, click the 'Scan Now >>' button.
  • Or, on the Dashboard, click the Scan Now >> button.
  • If an update is available, click the Update Now button.
  • A Threat Scan will begin.
  • When the scan is complete, if there have been detections, click Apply Actions to allow MBAM to clean what was detected.
  • In most cases, a restart will be required.
  • Wait for the prompt to restart the computer to appear, then click on Yes.
  • After the restart once you are back at your desktop, open MBAM once more.
  • Click on the History tab > Application Logs.
  • Double click on the scan log which shows the Date and time of the scan just performed.
  • Click 'Copy to Clipboard
  • Paste the contents of the clipboard into your next reply.

 

 

:step3: Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:

  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.



I would like you to paste the logs from all three scans into your next reply. I will examine those and determine what our next step should be. If there is evidence of serious infection, you might have to open a new thread in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware and Malware Removal Logs Forum, but let's not get ahead of ourselves yet.

I don't currently have any anti-virus firewall, as I removed it all to determine what the issue was, however the issue still remains. I was unable to load the ESTE. During step 2 of the initializing process it says, "Cannot get update. Is proxy configured?" I've tried a couple things, and cannot fix this.

Thank you for your logs. There appear to be some serious issues with your Internet connectivity. Let's try a few more scans. I am not sure that they can be dealt with them in this Forum, but I would like to see if I can find out the root cause of the issue(s).


:step1: Please run a BitDefender Online Scan.

  • Click I Agree to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Click Click here to scan to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished. This might take a while to run, but it is important that nothing else is running while you scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click on Click here to export the scan results.
  • Save the report to your desktop so you can post it in your next reply.

 

 

:step2: Please re-run the Malwarebytes Scan and ENSURE that you have checked "Rootkit" scanning BEFORE commencing the scan. It can be found under "Settings", "Detection and Protection".



:step3: Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.

  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

The Malwarebytes program is also saying "Your databases are out of date" but when I try to update it states "Unable to access update server"

I am student here with Bleeping Computer, studying malware removal.  I am going to refer this thread to the Study Hall Administrator to get her comments on what we should do here next, or whether you should be referred to the "Logs" or "Networking" Forum.

Thank you for your patience.  I have heard back from the Study Hall Administrator, and she has reviewed this thread.  The good news is, like me, she is not seeing any sign of active malware.  One of your winsock catalogues is corrupted.  This can be caused my malware, but there are other less nefarious causes.  Winsock catalogue corruption can, and does, cause Internet connectivity issues.
 
What I would like you to do, is to open an elevated command prompt and type a command for me and press <Enter>. This will reset all of your winsock catalogues.

To open an elevated command prompt, press the "Start" button. Go to "Programs", then to "Windows Accessories", and then RIGHT-click "Command Prompt", select "Run as Administrator". Then type the following:
netsh winsock reset
If you should receive any error message, please post it here.

Assuming that the command works properly (there is no malware blocking it), please check you Internet connectivity and report back.

Sorry for the delay caused by consulting an expert, but here at Bleeping Computer, the Number ONE rule is not to do ANY damage to a user's computer. Sort of like the doctors' rule: "Do No Harm." Thank you and have a great day.

I figured out a work around.  It stated it was successful and prompted me to resart my computer.  However, the issues still seems to remain the same.  Still cannot download google chrome or firefox
