I have an antivirus program (AVG) running all the time.I also have Malwarebytes free edition which I run only occasionally if my computer shows problems.  I like it, it usually manages to catch what slips past AVG.

For the last 3 days, it keeps starting itself. It runs scans that I didn't ask for. I close the program, but 30-60 minutes later it pops right back up.

The options in Advanced Settings are all greyed out. I can't change them. It has the "Start Malwarebytes with Windows" option ticked, and I can't untick it.

The task scheduler is likewise greyed out. It has a task set to check for updates once per hour, and I can't remove it.

I don't really want to uninstall it, it's useful, but this is getting annoying. What can I do?

Uninstall MBAM and install the free version. Use this link for the free version...not the trial version.

Download free version

Be sure to exit/ shut down MBAM before attempting to uninstall.

EDIT: You can use the below instructions for a clean removal of MBAM.

Removal Only

  • Please download mbam-clean.exe from here to your desktop and save it.
  • Please close all open applications and temporarily shutdown your antivirus to avoid any conflicts when running the tool.
  • Locate the file mbam-clean.exe and double-click to run it and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • Make sure you have re-enabled your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications after the restart

I would recommend performing a clean uninstall before reinstalling which is one of the solutions generally suggested by the Help Desk to try first.
