I have a 5 year old packard bell desktop, running 7 Home Premuim 64 bit. Been running fine with no problem updating windows until recently when after an apparent update, strange things started happening.

Started off one day when i went to start up I got a 'blue screen' error message which appeared, then disappeared before the machine shut down immediately (no chance to read or copy what the error was). Tried starting up again and all seemed fine. I started to investigate the problem and found the latest update had failed to install. Subsequently i kept getting windows update notifications but nothing got installed each time. No more blue screen errors at this point.

Last night i decided to to look into windows updates, find the failed update and try and manually install it, in the hope of clearing the problem. This time no sign of a failed update but i was still getting notification about a pending update. Still mystified i then ran the microsoft 'Fix It' tool. That either didnt work or couldnt find a problem to fix..I then saw i had some optional windows updates and thought i would install them, thinking there might be an issue with windows updates. Seemed to install fine.

This morning however when i turned on the blue screen error returned after the Bios displayed an option menu of (something like as i cant remember the exact wording) 1 Continue to boot normally or 2 delete recovery data and reboot.

Selecting continue normally brings up the blue screen then power off, the second option lets the PC boot normally. No other recovery options displayed.

Not sure what to do or even what the problem is. Should i try system restore? I know roughly when the problem started. If this cures the problem, how can i stop it happening again when the same or similar update tries to install again?

Sorry if this is a bit light on technical details, i wasn't able to capture much info when it happened and of course i cant recreate it just to do so. If it happens again i will try to make notes or do a screen capture, but like i said above the blue screen appeared and disappeared so fast i didn't have time to read it let alone copy it!

thanks

Run the chkdsk /r command on your Windows partition...and follow that with running the sfc /scannow command.  It appears to me that you have some file corruption and some files on bad sectors that need to be relocated.

Chkdsk Command, Windows 7, Aura - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/582646/cyclic-redundancy-error/?p=3759189

Run sfc scannow command prompt, Aura - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/579699/missing-uxthemedll-file/?p=3736491

Info only, do not worry about this, at the moment:  Error 41801 Content Index Catalog is corrupt - Microsoft Community - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/how-to-i-fix-error-41801-content-index-catalog-is/d3ab14d2-d123-4a09-8400-48946b562c9a .

I should add that i haven't had any BSOD errors since my first post. The problem now seems to be with Windows Updates (alone?). No updates have downloaded and installed since 9th March. There are a few optional updates available but they wont install. the only update i can do is the one up to Windows 10 which although i have downloaded it i do not want to run it yet. It appears though to be blocking any 7 updates that might be needed (dont know if there are any due).

This might be a different problem to the one originaly posted on, or it might all be connected. Hope this helps.

Please use the Snipping Tool to copy the image, you can find this tool in Accessories under All Programs.   After you have the image you will want to go to File and click on Save As, Pictures will open with this image, when it opens give it a name and click on save .

Snipping Tool Windows 7

To open the Snipping tool click on the Start orb rsz_1rsz_1rsz_start_orb_zpshjewtibd.png, then type snipping tool in the search box.  Snipping Tool will appear above the search box, right click on it and choose Run as administrator.

Before you open the Snipping Tool have the image you want to copy one the destop, then open the Snipping Tool.

A small white cross (+) will appear on the screen, move this to the lower left corner of the image you want to copy, press and hold the left mouse button and slowly move it to the right and upwards.  You will see a red rectangle form around the image, when you have the image isolated that you want, release the mouse.

After you have the image you will go to File and click on Save As, Pictures will open with this image, when it opens give it a name then click on Save.

You can post this image in your next post.  Just below the area where you write text in a post there is the Post button, to the right of this is More Reply Options
