I have a 5 year old packard bell desktop, running 7 Home Premuim 64 bit. Been running fine with no problem updating windows until recently when after an apparent update, strange things started happening.
Started off one day when i went to start up I got a 'blue screen' error message which appeared, then disappeared before the machine shut down immediately (no chance to read or copy what the error was). Tried starting up again and all seemed fine. I started to investigate the problem and found the latest update had failed to install. Subsequently i kept getting windows update notifications but nothing got installed each time. No more blue screen errors at this point.
Last night i decided to to look into windows updates, find the failed update and try and manually install it, in the hope of clearing the problem. This time no sign of a failed update but i was still getting notification about a pending update. Still mystified i then ran the microsoft 'Fix It' tool. That either didnt work or couldnt find a problem to fix..I then saw i had some optional windows updates and thought i would install them, thinking there might be an issue with windows updates. Seemed to install fine.
This morning however when i turned on the blue screen error returned after the Bios displayed an option menu of (something like as i cant remember the exact wording) 1 Continue to boot normally or 2 delete recovery data and reboot.
Selecting continue normally brings up the blue screen then power off, the second option lets the PC boot normally. No other recovery options displayed.
Not sure what to do or even what the problem is. Should i try system restore? I know roughly when the problem started. If this cures the problem, how can i stop it happening again when the same or similar update tries to install again?
Sorry if this is a bit light on technical details, i wasn't able to capture much info when it happened and of course i cant recreate it just to do so. If it happens again i will try to make notes or do a screen capture, but like i said above the blue screen appeared and disappeared so fast i didn't have time to read it let alone copy it!
