I got a virus on my computer called PromptDownloader. I didn't know how to remove it, so I brought it to a guy who said he would re-install Windows 7 and clean out my computer with compressed air. He did this, and removed 2 of my 6 fans because he said they were not working anymore. I picked up the computer, and have been using it for a couple days. I no longer have a smooth user experience with this computer. It is very slow and glitchy, the opposite of what I expected with a fresh install. Google Chrome crashes a lot. If I leave a Youtube video on the screen, even with it paused, my browser is almost guaranteed to crash. Playing a very non-cpu intensive game (Runescape) is even problematic. And my IP address isn't even the same anymore. It looks like I'm on a proxy somehow...

I'm hoping someone here could provide some insight as to why I'm experiencing these issues. Is it possible this guy used some bootlegged re-install disk? I'm hoping its that so I can just buy the $20 re-install disk off Amazon and fix these issues. Any input is greatly appreciated!!

Your IPv6 Address Is:
26**:58b:100:16ef:58ed:2b4d:** Stars to hide full IP.

Please download and run SeatTools for Windows.

Before the installation begins you will be prompted to either Decline or Accept the terms of the installation, click on I Accept.

Once the installation begins you will see an image similar to the one below.

seagate3_zps1fa1f71c.jpg

1.  SeaTools for Windows will search for HDDs and SSDs on your computer.  Please remove any external storage devices connected via USB ports.

2.  Detected Drives will list the HDDs and SSDs found.  Place a check mark in the drive box you want to run the scan on.

3.  You will see Basic Tests above Detected Drives, move the mouse pointer over this.

4.  A menu will open with options for the different scans, please click on Long Generic Test

5.  This will start the scan.  When the scan is complete you will see the result under Test Status , please post the results in your topic.

 seatools4_zpsd7balf76.png

6.  Post the results of the scan in your topic.

7.  Click on Help, then click on View Log File.  If the scan failed take a screen shot of the Log File and post it in your topic.

I can't get the log file for some reason. It just brings me up to an interface showing a bunch of folders like "az-NM" etc. I can't save the file. Is it because my drive status failed? That does not sound good.

There is no log per say.  You can see where the Drive Status indicates that the drive failed the test.  This is where the results of the test are found.  In this case the drive has failed.  I would suggest backing up all of your important data to removable media, such as an external hdd, flash drive, Cloud account, etc.  The drive could quit working at any time, then again it could continue to work for some time to come.  But I wouldn't count on this.  If this were my computer I would purchase a new storage drive and install the operating system and your saved data and use it.

In addition to dc3 above, you also need the drivers for that mainboard; without those drivers installed your unit will never run properly. Hopefully they will be posted on the manufacturer's website, usually under a category marked "customer service" or possibly "downloads", etc.

If you reinstall from an image-restore partition on the original drive, all will be included. However, if you reinstall Windows onto a new drive they will not be included. If you made image backups to an external drive then just re-image back on to the new drive and you are done. If you have not been making backups then you must find those mainboard drivers and install them.

Help Requests: If there is no reply after 3 days I remove the thread from my answer list. For further help PM me.

There is no important data left on the machine at this time. What do you think of this drive? I really have no clue what I'm looking for here, but it seems to be an upgraded drive manufactured by the same company. And if you could confirm that this is the disk I need that would be great too. Why do you think my drive has failed? This computer worked great until I got the virus. Did the virus kill my drive maybe?

I believe I have found the drivers. Do I install all of them? Could this possibly repair the drive I've been advised to replace?

What you had in this computer is a 3.5 inch 465GB Western Digital hdd.  You can use any 3.5 hdd you want.  Unless your motherboard has the UEFI  BIOS firmware I would not go with anything larger the 2TB.

The drivers you need:

> Audio

> Chipset

> Realtec LAN driver; the diagnostic utility is your choice, it probably won't hurt to have it

> Intel Rapid Storage

> Gigabyte SATA2 Driver

I suggest that you download and save separately to a CD the AHCD drivers, just in case you ever get an SSD drive.

> It also appears that you have a separate video card, Nvidia GeForce 9500GT.  You will need the drivers for that card from the Nvidia website: http://www.geforce.com/drivers

   *Choose Manual Drivers Search
   *Windows 7  64-bit
*In the Results box that opens up below, choose May2, 2011
   *Agree & Download

Just a thought....check through your files and make sure if the manufacturer supplied those drivers on a CD, or sent the drivers on a CD for the video card. It would be very convenient if they did.

You can get a Windows 7 Pro/64-bit ISO and burn it to a disk for free here: http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/

You will need your original Windows key number when installing it.

Also....really consider getting yourself an external backup system; it costs very little and would be hugely helpful for virus infections, drive failures, etc. (both of which you have experienced). In fact, it is the only answer for the infamous encryption viruses that are currently the major threat out there. You could have recovered and been back up and running in an hour.

@ ranchhand

The website that you provided the link for posted that information back in August of 2011.  In February of 2015 Microsoft removed all of these ISO downloads.  They eventually relented to allow those with a legal retail copy of Windows 7 and its product code to download a ISO of Windows 7 from their website.  You will have to enter your product code, if it passes you can make the download.

The following is from the My Digital Life website which you provided the link to.  I used your link to go to their website but when I selected a Windows 7 ISO download it opened to an ad to sell Windows Office 2016.  I tried all of the Windows 7 English versions, they all had the same ad for Windows Office.

"The Windows 7 ISO images hosted on Digital River is genuine and official version, and the downloads from the server is legal. It’s after all one of the official channel where end-users who purchase a license (product key) for Windows 7 get the setup installation files.

Anyway, without a genuine and legally purchased product key, you can’t get Windows 7 activated, and Windows 7 will only run as evaluation copy for up to 30 days."

You can download a ISO for Windows 7 at Microsoft.  But you will need to have a legal retail copy of Windows 7 and its product key.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Ok, thanks dc3!  It's been a long time since I d/loaded an ISO from the website, I just assumed it was still current. So....can the OP can go to M/Soft's website and use his OEM key # to download an ISO of Windows 7? Saves him some money anyway. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try anyway.

The OEM key won't work.  Other people already tried and failed.
