How old is this machine? i'm having similar issues with my home machine and the problem is a failing CMOS battery.  I have these on order from Amazon.  Fortunately my machine will boot, eventually, with the failing battery.  I installed another battery that had never been used, but from 2011, and it did exactly what you're describing.
