Hi All.

When I mouse over items in the taskbar and system tray, a readable popup usually appears. Occasionally, the popup is hidden behind the items and it is necessary to reboot to fix this.

I have hunted around but cannot find a setting to keep these popups on top. Any clues??

Cheers

Besides the 'BAGMRU' option (which did repair my XP a while ago) I found yet another MS Article:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=912650&SD=tech

Unfortunately the outcome of this one is: "This is a known issue in WinXP"....

Article:

Tooltips for some taskbar icons are hidden behind the taskbar on a Windows XP-based computer

SYMPTOMS
When you move the mouse pointer over the taskbar icons on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, some tooltips are hidden behind the taskbar.

This issue may occur if you right-click and then open a file from a submenu in the Start menu. For example, this issue may occur when you click Start, point to My Documents or My Recent Documents, right-click a document, and then click Open.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Log off and then log back on to the current account.
Restart your computer.

Found the MS Article about the 'BagMRU' value:

By default, Windows remembers each folder's view settings and customizations. This data is limited to 400 folders and is stored in the following registry keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam
To increase the number of folders that Windows can remember the view settings for, create a DWORD value named BagMRU Size in each of these registry keys, and set its value data to the number of folders that you want Windows to remember the settings for. For example, if you set the value to 5000, Windows can remember the settings for 5000 folders.

Tell me if it worked ok?
