I have my serial key from my computer tower. A repair shop is removing windows 10 and reinstalling 8,1. I will not have a restore portition. Windows 10 removed the one I had. How can I get one to go with the key I have. I downloaded one from the windows download sight but the tec people told me it will not work with my key?? Help.

If the computer was an OEM such as HP or Dell and it came preinstalled with Windows 8 or 8.1 the key for activation is embedded in firmware. You can download the Windows 8.1 Media Creation Tool here. Once installed the computer will self-activate once online. Do not let the shop charge you for the install of Windows 8.1 if your computer came installed with Windows 8/8.1 and was an OEM computer.


You can confirm your Windows 8/8.1 key by downloading FirmwareTablesView here. Your key will be listed under the MSDM table.
