I have to remember what Group I was in and go back to see my Replys.
After I type my Massage I put a check in Fallow This Topic.

Yes, you are doing it right.

What you need to do is click the drop down arrow next to your name on the top right hand side of any forum page.

Choose My Settings.

When Settings opens, click Notification Options on the left side of the page.

Under Topics & Posts look at Notification method to use for replies to followed topics. To the right of that, Email should be checked. It sounds as if it is not checked for you.

Scroll down and Save Changes.

You can also check Notification List which will notify you by displaying a number next to the Notification icon between your name and the envelope icon. You can click on the Notification icon to see who replied to what topic.

Also, be sure you have a check mark in the box to the left of: "Auto follow topics I reply to. Notification frequency:"  and that you choose, "Immediate" after Notification Frequency.
