Whenever I use or open windows especially with videos in it, the explorer crashes. I either double click on something, then windows media player classic opens then closes. Then windows explorer crashes.

there are other times when other apps crashed when using windows explorer, like when i'm using either firefox or IE to upload videos on youtube. When I browse for my videos and the view is on thumbnail view, it crashes the firefox or IE, whichever I'm using to upload. I'm wondering if it's something wrong with IE, it's been happening over a week now. I did virus scans, adware and spybot scans. I checked updates, I can't figure out what's happening.

Here's my Hijackthis log

Your log looks clean.

So please try this:

Please run Notepad and paste the following text into a new file:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler]
@=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}]

Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files".
This is how the reg file must look afterwards: Posted Image

Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.

Then go to Start -> Run, and paste into the run box:

regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

Press enter, and click OK to any prompts to unregister this DLL.

Restart your computer. See if this fixes the problem, and post back to let me know.

Wow that seem to help a lot. It doesn't crash anymore! Thank you!

What was the reason, you think, this happened anyway? And what did that reg thing do?

This problem occurs because Windows scans the large AVI file when you click it in Windows Explorer. When you click a large AVI file (for example, when you click a 700-megabyte [MB] AVI file) in Windows Explorer, Windows tries to query the index of the file. If there is no index information in the file, Windows performs a loop to check all portions of the file to build the index. Because of the large size of the AVI file (in this example, 700 MB), it takes a long time for Windows to scan the whole file. Because of this behavior, the CPU usage of the Explorer.exe process reaches 100 percent.

By the way, if you to re-enable thumbnail preview, you need to re-register the shmedia.dll file again. Like this:

Go to Start -> Run, and paste into the run box:

regsvr32 shmedia.dll

Press enter, and click OK to any prompts to register this DLL.

Restart your computer.

Should I just do this anyway, if I'm not going to make it thumbnail view? Just in case?

You're welcome

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP make sure you get updated to SP-2!!

Please post back if you are still having any problems....

My windows explorer seems to do the same thing with the avi files. The cpu goes up 100% then closes the window but opens the file.

maybe the settings didn't save. Just like how my screen saver settings doesn't save at no screen saver but reverts back to it's previous screen saver.
