Hello,

First time poster here. I found this great website and hope someone can help with some strange behavior I have been having with my laptop.

(I am not a computer expert :P).

I had been using Avast antivirus free version up until yesterday. Over the last 6 months my computer has been running slower and slower, (it used to take about 30 seconds to startup a year ago, but recently it was taking up to 5-8 minutes, and it continued to lag badly even after this. On top of this, when I tried to run some programs I would occasionally receive an error "the stub received bad data". On a second attempt the program would start.

It seemed the problem was related to Avast - when I disabled it, the lag disappeared along with the 'bad data' error. I had scanned the computer using Avast and Spybot search and destroy, nothing showed up.

Because the lag was unbearable I had disabled Avast and have used the computer for around the last 3 weeks. (very stupid...I know)

Just yesterday I noticed a strange file on the desktop, size 0 bytes (it was associated VLC media player by icon, not sure of the extension). It was tiled something along the lines of "Play video games". I am 99.9% certain I did not create this file-very suspiscious. I foolishly shift-deleted this file (tired and not thinking straight!).

I then uninstalled Avast, and installed Bitdefender Antivirus free edition and ran a deep scan. It identified 4 issues which were resolved. I then did a scan with Malwarebytes, and it identified around 8 issues (one of which was listed as a trojan, and 7 listed "PUPs"). I restarted and re-ran the scan, the issues seemed resolved.

The problem now is I am not 100% sure that my computer is clean from infection. At the taskbar bottom right, there is a little popup notification that appears- it lasts for literally one frame every minute and is impossible to read. After struggling I did manage to screencapture the message as a video and then read it. It says that "windows defender and Bitdefender is disabled", although it appears that both of these are indeed running- I am not sure if this is true. I may be paranoid....but this is very strange to me!

If someone can help, that would be great! I am running Windows 8.1

Regards

Was not sure which to post for AdwCleaner, so here is C1.txt followed by S1. txt. JRT.txt comes after that. Sophos did not detect anything, and there was no option to print a log or view details (the details button was greyed out and un-clickable). Thank you for the help by the way.

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any trojans, rootkits or bootkits were listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Scan without installing plugin" and then on "Scan now")

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly (you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix).

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

11. Read:
How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html
Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/keep-your-computer-safe-online/

12. Please, let me know, how your computer is doing.

Thank you immensely for your timely and thorough help! :)

When I ran Delfix it took a few seconds (20 or 30), and the log then popped up on screen saying there wasn't any issues. However the desktop went 'grey' (the same colour as my 'start screen' mode - which I never use anyway).

I could not see anything except for the log file, and this grey - patternless background (the start screen has a swirl but this was not visible). There was no taskbar and right clicking did nothing. I could ctrl-alt-del and after 5 minutes gave it a restart.

The computer started back up no problems at all (I was stressed that something may have gone terribly wrong!). To see if the problem happened again, I re-downloaded and re-ran the DelFix tool, and everything went smoothly - and no grey screen this time.

In addition, I did get a 'The stub received bad data' error when trying to run Junkware Removal Tool yesterday, however on an instant second attempt it started up no problem.

Perhaps my laptop has a hardware fault (or something else)? Guess I'll have to create another thread somewhere else on this site.

Apart from this, everything is running much more smoothly than before (no troubles with bootup etc - I will stay with Bitdefender).

Once again you've been great 10/10 will definitely recommend this website to anyone with an issue.

Regards

Hi - just another quick update.

I was just doing some work and the exact same bug happened again. The screen went grey and all I could see were my open tabs. I could ctrl-alt-del, and I had to restart. The restart took around 3 minutes (longer than before) and the computer made a 'whizz' sound which lasted around 1 second, all the items on the desktop flashed and disappeared for around 2 seconds then appeared again. Thats the best description I can give.

I'm guessing my computer might have some sort of hardware issue, maybe related to graphics card?

Would you have any suggestion of where to go from here?
