Hi everybody,

I'm new to this forum. A moderator from Microsoft forum told me about this site.

I have a old Windows Vista that I'm trying to service myself. Just the basis operating problems.  I wanted to know if anyone had a opinion about running more that one anti-virus program. At present, I'm running Malwarebytes Ant-Malware(Free) program version 2.2.0.1024, Microsoft Security Essentials and tdsskiller application (4,618kb). Since putting in the Malwarebytes, the system runs better---finding 5 virus that it removed out of about 320,000 scanned items. I wanted to put in some other ant-virus programs, but I'm not sure if it's good for the operating system. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks to Bleeping Computer.com for this great forum.

Thanks

Welcome to BC...

No need to burden the old computer with more than one antivirus. Purchasing MBAM would be a good idea especially if

you are prone to picking malware and adware.

Post the log showing what MBAM found and deleted/ quarantined. You can find the log by clicking on

the History tab.....the scan log..not the update logs.

Use the programs below to find and remove adware and malware. Always better to use more than just one scanner.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the

Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.

After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.

CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan button.
  • When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
  • download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
  • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.
  • NOTE:Sometimes if ESET finds no infections it will not create a log.

That one scan found and removed a lot of adware. You should continue by scanning with the Junkware Removal Tool and a scan

using Eset Online Scanner.

One antivirus is okay. I wouldn't suggest purchasing another.

Hi BC Adviser,

I wanted to thank you for all your help with my Dell Laptop. Would you be able to give me any tips problem-solving running wireless. My system has been set -up wireless since installation.  I need to turn the computer off to get it to print. Once it restarts it usually prints, but I need to print what I want immediately after it restarts.

The other thing I wanted to ask is I tried to click ESET online Scanner and it was unable to complete the scan. I did notice that it did find some bad files from adw cleaner but, I was unable do anything to remove them.

                      Thanks again

Ron

Have you run the Junkware Removal Tool? If not, please do that.

It's been a while since you scanned using MBAM and AdwCleaner. I don't know how much you have used the computer

or if you have installed any new software since then. So, I suggest you rerun those and allow them to remove whatever they find.

The printer problem....I suggest you finish up here in this topic before starting a new topic in the External Hardware Forum.

Post the three lists mentioned below using CCleaner.

Open CCleaner and click on Tools. Choose Startups. On that page you will see a list of Windows Startups and at the top tabs for each browser and Scheduled Tasks.

At the bottom right of that page you will see a button when clicked will allow you to Copy and Paste the list of Windows Startups and Scheduled Tasks into your next

post. Please do that.

Open CCleaner and click on Tools. Choose Uninstall. On that page you will see a list of programs installed on your computer and at the bottom right of that page you

will see a button when clicked will allow you to Copy and Paste that list in your next post. Please do that.

Hi BC Adviser,

Thank you for your continued help.

I believe I installed most or have run all of your suggested programs. Yes I have run the Junkware Removal Tool twice, but I only download it. Can I save it? I did this with the CC cleaner and I have a icon for it,  also great item. I have my wife also cleaning the computer. I have been scanning with MBAM and AdwCleaner also. My wife and I are the only ones that use the Computer. I am a hobbyist and my wife is a retired journalist. We use it every day. I have not purchased any virus software. Any suggestions?

The printer is another problem, but I wanted to address these problems first.

I wanted to get this off the you. I will work on getting the other information on the CCCleaner off to you as soon.

My wife ever notices how great the computer is running. A question my wife has is some of the News sites require Adobe to view the paper and I discourage it, because we are using Mozilla Firefox. They claim Adobe causes problems. So I don't know how I can resolve this. If I choose another web browser. Any any suggestions.

Your help has been greatly appreciated.

Best,

Ron

News sites that require Adobe Flash to view their videos....is that what you are referring to? If not, please give a link to

a news site that you can't view. Do you have Adobe Flash plug-in in the Firefox browser? You can check that by clicking on

Tools > Add-ons > plugins.  While plugins are open, click on the Check For Updates. Do the same for Extensions.

Hi,

Here is the CC Cleaner information that you requested. In regards the the news sites, it's not the videos. What they provide are actual papers online that you can flip through. The same that you would purchase. I have provided the info on Firefox concerning Adobe, that is available from add-ons plug ins.

Once you have uninstalled the old Adobe Reader you can install the latest from here: Ninite - Install or Update Multiple Apps at Once

That site does not include adware in their downloads. Adobe site allows adware to be bundled with its free downloads.

I am terribly sorry, here it is. I also went into CCleaner and uninstalled the affected programs. When I uninstalled Adobe I was unable to find it in the startup list to disable.

I tried twice to install Ninite but it failed. Here is what I received.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry About The Error

Here are some common errors and their solutions. Please get in touch with us if you need more help.

Error 215 / Certificate Error

Some firewalls and HTTP proxies can interfere with Ninite's connections and cause this. Please try running the installer again with those tools disabled.

Also make sure that the date is set correctly on the PC.

If it's a certificate revocation error it will be easy to fix, please see our certificate revocation error page.

Failed download

The first thing to try is simply running the installer again. Sometimes these failures are caused by temporary quirks at our download mirrors or on your PC. If errors persist, it's best to just manually install the app from the publisher's site.

Failed installation

Try to manually install the app from the publisher's site. This will likely give you an error message with a reason for the failure. If it actually succeeds, drop us a line so we can investigate why it failed to install with Ninite.

Before going to the publisher's site, you can also try to reboot your PC and then try to install the app with Ninite again.

Skipped (.NET required)

Go to Ninite.com and make another installer with .NET and the application that was skipped. Try running that installer.

Skipped (program running/locked)

Close the program you're updating, and possibly your browser. Then try again.

Skipped (misc.)

Ninite cannot install this app on your PC. Sorry!

Disable both Scheduled Tasks using CCleaner by clicking on each and then choose Disable on the right.

You can download Adobe Reader from the link below. Be sure to choose Vista in the dropdown window before downloading.

You will need to select English and Version, too. Only one version will be offered....10.1.4

Be sure to watch closely during install and UNcheck any offer of toolbars, Google Chrome or anything other the Reader.

There may or may not be something bundled with the Reader download.

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Install for all versions

EDIT: Thought I should mention/ clarify that Vista is no longer supported by Adobe Reader. That's why only the old 10.1.4 is

offered. Hopefully that will be okay with Firefox. In order to use the latest Reader you would need Windows 7 or

newer. If Firefox allows the install of the old Reader then only a test of it on the news site will tell if it works there or not.

Hi BC Adviser,

Sorry to trouble you. I don't  know if this is a virus issue or Windows Vista problem.

I am experiencing a terrible time with my old Inspiron - 1720 Dell Notebook where it takes me quite a while to open a Icon Shortcut or  the  computer constantly reports that Mozilla Firefox has crashed. I use the CC Cleaner but sometimes that does not help. I also use the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware cleaner. I also get this script message which causes a problem. It gives me three options I either hit delete or X it out,

but it still returns. I have googled it and also went into Microsoft for help with no sussess.

As always your computer expertise is appreciated.

Best,

Ron

What is the error message...the script one?

Perhaps you have picked up some adware. Use the two programs below and post the results per instructions.
