I have an external HDD that has stopped working. Not recognised when plugged into the PC. I removed the drive from the casing and placed it in a docking station. The drive started OK but is showing a RAW file system, how do i get my files back or how do i convert it back to a readable format eg NTFS

Thanks in advance

Often when this happens, the hard drive is dying.

Each access of the drive decreases the chances that you'll be able to recover anything.

I suggest the recovery software from here:  http://www.runtime.org

It is free to look at your drive (and tell you what it can recover), but you'll have to pay to actually recover anything.

There are free options out there (Recuva and PCInspector.de), but I am not familiar with them.

Once you've recovered your files, I would suggest running HDD diagnostics ( http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html )

Then, if it passes, you can use the built in Windows utilities to initialize and format the disk.

My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
