At random intervals a running program window will close and show on the task bar (usually). The program is still running. A click on the name in the bar restores it. This started a few days ago. The only change made to the system was the addition of a UPS. Problem still exists when UPS control program is disabled. Event log shows an error, but no available information. Anyone have an idea? I'm out of them!

Is it a particular program, or does this occur with all programs?
Have you updated, and run your antivirus?
Have you done any online virus scans?
Have you run any Spyware/Malware programs?
What Spyware/Malware programs do you use?

Happens with all programs. I scaned with EZ Virus (CA assoc) and Spyware (webroot). All report clean. I suspect the UPS software. UPS connects thru com1. I'm going to disconect the com link and see what happens. The time interval for the fault to occur varies from about 15 mins to several hours. I e-mailed the UPS Mfg but no reply yet.

Do you have the UPS connected with a USB cable or a serial cable through com1?

Serial thru com1. Still have problem with cable disconnected. Tried removing UPS software but control panel can't get rid of all of it. If it's not the UPS I don't know where to look.

What's the make of the UPS. Have you tried to reinstall it's software? How's about manually removing it?
