Hi SociallyAwkard,

or try clicking it with my mouse,

How can you try clicking it with your mouse if it has not started ?

Do you just use "Sleep Mode" or "Hibernation Mode" where you shut the top (laptop) when finished, and do not "save your work"

Please read at the top of Windows7 area, the tips mostly by Grinler for "How to start Windows in Safe Mode".

Post your results back here, and we can take it from there.

Also, do you run Antivirus, and Antimalware like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Thank You..

Check for corrupted or missing system files by using SFC.
Follow the directions here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833

Since you cannot access command prompt from the Start Menu you will have to get to a different way.

In an empty spot in your bottom task bar RIGHT click and choose Task Manager.

When Task Manager opens, look on the bottom right and click New Task.

Type in cmd

Click OK. If asked do you want to run as administrator say YES.

Thank You..

By "it" i mean the start button, or 'orb' with the windows logo on it, on the task bar. So when i move the mouse cursor over it, it will light up, but when i click on it, the start menu does not appear. Hope that clears it up. I do have anti-virus and Malwarebytes installed as well.

Type in cmd

Click OK. If asked do you want to run as administrator say YES.

when i open cmd via the task manager, it does not ask if i want to run as an administrator, therefore i am unable to run the sfc /scannow command

Since you can't get to the Start menu, I'd boot from an install disc or a repair disc and try doing a repair.  If you don't have either, you can make on on another computer having the same version of Windows (32 or 64 bit) as yours.  On that PC click Start -> Control Panel -> Backup and Restore -> Create system repair disc.  Insert a blank CD-R and it will create it in about 3 minutes.

If that doesn't work, you could try booting to Safe Mode.  Usually you do that by pressing F8 a few seconds after powering up, but check your user guide to be see if yours might be different.

 Good luck.

Right click on cmd and then select Run as Administrator. It will not ask  you, but you must tell it.

What is the result now ? Can you click on the start ORB and get any reaction ?

If not please carefully read the post by Queen-Evie and try again

You seemed OK with the programs that Hamluis asked for, so it must be operating a little bit better.

By the way, have you ever installed Windows Updates ? (Important)

The reading from your Speccy produces this HDD is ? dying or faulty ?

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1

Storage

931GB Seagate GoFlex Desk USB Device (USB (SATA)): 53 °C << Faulty one
Computer type: Desktop

Installation Date: 8/29/2014 9:06:05 PM

No updates are listed in the lower area of the scan, and your M/soft Office has missed all updates for 18 months (if it was installed as a Current version).
Seagate GoFlex Desk USB Device <<= This is the faulty one...

SATA type: SATA-II 3.0Gb/s
Device type: Fixed

S.M.A.R.T

Temperature: 53 °C <<= Normal should be not over 40 °C
Temperature Range: Warning (50 °C to 55 °C)
S.M.A.R.T attributes, (I will not list all the bad ones, not my job)

That is my reading of it.........

@Jaycan

As i told Queen-Evie, if i open cmd via task manager, it will not be opened with the administrator privileges. I had to manually find it on my c: drive and then click on it. when i try the sfc command, it says "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.". I'll probably try it in safe mode. operating better in what way exactly? I have installed updates but not for the last few months. If the HDD is faulty or dying I'm not aware of it, it seems to run fine. It's an external HDD and it's not always connected. I mostly use it for storage, i don't run anything off of it. Thanks

Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode where a stripped down minimal version of Windows is loaded.  It eliminates a lot of things that have been installed on your computer that might be interfering with normal operation.  If problems you're having in normal mode go away when you're in Safe Mode, you know it's probably some of the software you installed that's causing the problem.  If the problem persists in Safe Mode, that usually means something in Windows has gotten corrupted somehow.

 Good luck.

Make regular full system backups or you'll be sorry sooner or later.

Basically the title says it all. weather i use the windows button on the keyboard or try clicking it with my mouse, nothing happens. Any ideas?

In order to be able to use the keyboard or mouse the computer would have to be on, so I'm assuming that this is the case.  The question is what are you attempting to do that you can't use the keyboard or mouse?

Obviously you have some functionality with the keyboard and mouse, how else would you be able to produce the Speccy Snapshot or the MiniToolBox log.  Please explain what is working, and what is not working.

There are some S.M.A.R.T. attributes that are indicating a possible problem with the C: drive hdd.

Please download and run SeatTools for Windows.

Before the installation begins you will be prompted to either Decline or Accept the terms of the installation, click on I Accept.

Once the installation begins you will see an image similar to the one below.

seagate3_zps1fa1f71c.jpg

1.  SeaTools for Windows will search for HDDs and SSDs on your computer.  Please remove any external storage devices connected via USB ports.

2.  Detected Drives will list the HDDs and SSDs found.  Place a check mark in the drive box you want to run the scan on.

3.  You will see Basic Tests above Detected Drives, move the mouse pointer over this.

4.  A menu will open with options for the different scans, please click on Long Generic Test

5.  This will start the scan.  When the scan is complete you will see the result under Test Status , please post the results in your topic.

 seatools4_zpsd7balf76.png

6.  Post the results of the scan in your topic.

7.  Click on Help, then click on View Log File.  If the scan failed take a screen shot of the Log File and post it in your topic.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

@ dc3

i tried the test and the result was a fail. i know the hard drive has been getting bsod's lately, since this is the 4th HDD to be damaged by my system, and no one can tell me what the cause is, so i've just been going with this hdd for a while now, and other than the occasional bsod, there doesn't seem to be any other major issues.

But back to the matter at hand,

In order to be able to use the keyboard or mouse the computer would have to be on, so I'm assuming that this is the case.  The question is what are you attempting to do that you can't use the keyboard or mouse?

Obviously you have some functionality with the keyboard and mouse, how else would you be able to produce the Speccy Snapshot or the MiniToolBox log.  Please explain what is working, and what is not working.

i'll try to explain this as simply as i can again. There isn't anything wrong with my mouse or keyboard. My problem concerns the WINDOWS START BUTTON. it's the small orb in the bottom left corner on the task-bar. It's a blue coloured orb with the windows 7 logo on it. When you hover your mouse cursor over it, it will light up. Clicking on this button should open the START MENU(the menu with links to control panel, shut down and sleep functions, My Documents, Run, Accessories and others etc depending on how you customized it), but in MY CASE, when i click on it ,nothing happens. In other words, the start menu DOES NOT OPEN. With reference to the keyboard, there is a button in between Ctrl and alt, also with the windows logo on it. Punching this button should ALSO open the start menu, but again in MY CASE, nothing happens. In other words, the start menu DOES NOT OPEN.

I hope i have clearly explained the problem and i hope you understand now, thank you very much.

Two things I noticed from the above posts.  First Chrome is crashing all over the place, so I'd uninstall it and reinstall.  Second the SMART data for your hard drive is indicating an overheating problem.  I'd download and install a temperature monitoring program and check all of them out.  I use SpeedFan, but there are others as well.

 Good luck.
