I noticed smitfraud on my computer this afternoon. Downloaded the smitfraudfix and proceeded with removing it. It seemed to go away, but my firefox browser has issues with crashing on youtube and gametrailers. havent tried other sites. I recieve a shockwave error, that never happened before. I tried reinstalling shockwave and flash player, but it stalls and nothing happens. then if i try to shut it down, the window closes, but it is still in operation in the task manager. I will post a hijackthis log. please tell me if there is anything else you need to help me with my problem. thank you.

A mod should come along and transfer your HJT log to the proper forum. In the meantime, I'd suggest not doing anything until the HJT team gets done with your log.

While waiting, you can read up on backing up your Firefox, completely removing it from your system, and then reinstalling it. But don't do it until your HJT log has been worked - it may hide some of the bad entries that are needed by them.

Thank you. I would like to add a point to this. While playing Battlefield 2 right before this, the game would just stop. no movement or anything for a few seconds, then it would return to normal. I'm not sure of the correlation, but every few minutes it will repeat that process of stalling and then working.

Viruses and spyware do nasty things to your system. This is because, unlike reputable programs, they don't respect the conventions that are used in working on system files.

So, they usually break important files when they install - and even if they do work, removing the virus may then break the file.

But, the BF2 thing sounds like a resource issue that may, or may not, be caused by the virus.

well, when I play Battlefield 2 in singleplayer mode, the problem does not persist. It's only when playing online. Also, on this website and tweakguides, the net works fine. When I go to gametrailers and youtube, I get hangs and unresponsiveness. This happens with both IE and Firefox.

Hey there metalun, welcome to BleepingComputer.

I see a few entries in your log which need to be removed. You have a nasty backdoor trojan which we need to deal with as soon as possible. Here is a quote from the Norton website about this backdoor - "W32.Xabot.Worm is a worm that attempts to spread itself through the IRC and file-sharing networks. It also has backdoor Trojan Horse capabilities, which allows a hacker to gain control of a compromised computer." Due to the status of some of the files you have on your computer, I strongly recommend that you do the following immediately. Disconnect the infected computer from the internet until the computer can be cleaned. From a clean computer, change your online passwords-- for email, for banks, eBay, forums etc.... Do not change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information.
You can read more about the file here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/w...2.exe-5408.html

I recieve a shockwave error, that never happened before.

I think it would be useful for everyone reading this thread if you posted the entire error message as this might enable us to pinpoint the problem. Some sites may have detection mechanisms that mistakenly direct you to install the Shockwave or Flash Player, leading to an error message. You can use the following Test Page to verify that you have the Shockwave and Flash Players installed successfully: http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/welcome

You said that you tried to uninstall the shockwave player, then reinstall it.
I had a look around and it seems that quite a few users are having this problem.
The company released an external uninstaller which is capable of wiping the system of the macromedia shockwave player - it might then be possible to reinstall cleanly. In some cases, it's actually the browser which is preventing the successful installation of Shockwave Player, so close all windows when you try to install it again.
http://download.shockwave.com/pub/shockwav...uninstaller.exe

It is a good idea to print off these instructions:
This will be useful as there is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available.
You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.
A print out of the instructions would be a good reference to make sure you don't yet lost.
Also, it is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and also that you don't miss any steps out!
If you have any queries about the process or just general questions, just ask.

1) Please download Ewido Anti-Spyware and save the file to your desktop.
This is a free 30 day trial version of the program.
  • Locate the icon on your desktop and double click it to open the set-up program.
  • Follow the instructions on screen to install Ewido.
  • Run the program and you will meet the main screen.
  • Select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link
  • Next click the "Start Update" button; a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Now select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Close the program now, we will be running a scan a bit later.
  • You can go ahead and delete the old setup file from your desktop.
2) Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Class - {8F85F3C5-0FD4-8589-EE5F-628F5F2223CC} - C:\WINDOWS\prtrt1.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Update 64 BIT] wininit32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update 64 BIT] wininit32.exe
O16 - DPF: {DECEAAA2-370A-49BB-9362-68C3A58DDC62} (SAIX) - http://static.zangocash.com/cab/Zango/ie/b...d84c831d43d35df

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

3) Open hijackthis, click 'config' (bottom right)
Choose the tab 'misc Tools' on top.
Choose 'delete a file on reboot'
In the field, copy and paste next:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wininit32.exe

Click open.
Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now.
When asked if you want to reboot now, say No.

4) Launch Ewido by double clicking on the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab.
  • Then click on the "Complete System Scan" button.
  • If you have any infections you will be asked for an action - select "apply all actions".
  • Now select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Click "Save Report As" and save the text file to your desktop.
  • Close Ewido and reboot.
5) Open HijackThis.
Click on Open Misc Tools Section
Make sure that both boxes beside "Generate StartupList Log" are checked:
  • List all minor sections(Full)
  • List Empty Sections(Complete)
Click Generate StartupList Log.
Click Yes at the prompt.
It will open a text file. Please copy the entire contents of that page and paste it here

6) Malware like this normally never comes alone and there are probably infected files left on your computer.
Please visit Panda Online to carry out a virus scan.
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
Enter your personal details.
Click the big Scan Now button.
It will ask to install various content - please allow this.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan, which may take a while.
When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan.
When the scan completes, click the See Report button.
Click Save Report and save the file to your desktop.

So, please post back with the following logs
You may need multiple posts for the longer logs so they won't get cut off:
1) A new Hijackthis log
2) The ewido log.
3) The startup list.
4) The panda log.

Also, my notrton anti-virus detects a virus now.
Object Name: C\WINDOWS\lpt7.jcq
Virus Name: Trojan Horse
Action Taken: Unable to repair this file
Action Taken: Access to this file was denied.

I tried to manually right click on the object but it was not found or was being used by another program.

Hey there metalun.

I now see a clean log here, well done.
I would like to take a look at that file Norton found before we delete it.

1) Go to this page.
Enter the url of this thread in the first field.
Where it says, browse to the file that you want to submit, copy and paste next in the field:

C\WINDOWS\lpt7.jcq

Then click the Send File button below.
Please let me know when you have submitted the file.
I will take a look and let you know the best way to delete it if need be.

2) Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

3) Malware like this normally never comes alone and there are probably infected files left on your computer.
Post the contents of the report in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis log, and the combofix log.

Also, please let me know how the system is running.
David

Thank you for the help. I have submitted the file you asked for. My computer seems to run fine now, however I do get the warning from Norton involving the trojan. It only happens once in a while and doesnt get in the way. Maybe once a session, less sometimes.

Sorry about the missing log piece. The file you told me to delete on reboot is still there. when my computer went to reboot, it hung while loading up. so i turned it off and then turned it back on. I will try to do it again though. My computer seems to be running fine also. All the other parts of instructions went well.

Also I almost forgot. The file "MEDIA GATEWAY" I was unable to find. I used the seach function and lookid manually for it. My Panda log also finishes off with the disinfected virus log there was no more after that. Thank You.

Ok that's fine.
I see a clean log here.
I didn't expect the MEDIA GATEWAY folder to be there.
It looked like that last entry was cut off, but obviously not.
I'm still unsure what this desktop icon is..
IF you run a scan with Norton in safe mode can it delete it?
What does the file look like on your desktop.

Hmm I wasnt able to get rid of it in safe mode. I tried to right click on it and scan with Norton, it just said that it was unable to access the file. I tried an ewido scan just for the heck of it, and it found nothing wrong. it's 137 kb and not sure what's the problem. Also everytime I tried to scan with norton by right clicking on it another Norton pop-up appeared and warned about a trojan being installed. The date created says sometime in 2003, though I dont know if that's accurate or not. Thanks
