I am trying to help a neighbor get her desktop running.  When I got there, it was beeping on boot.  I removed the memory stick (pc2-5300 x 2 gb)

I cleaned it with an eraser with a static bracelet on and re-installed it...It posted but I did not have monitor attached at that point.  I brought it to my house and hooked it up and believe it or not it booted.  She does not even have internet service so I decided to do some windows updates and run some scans.  No problems found. I then installed some used pc2-4200 (2 x 2 gb) to speed it up but it would not post so I replaced the old ram back.  Now I only get BSOD...ox0000008e (0xc0000005,0x81d56F15,ox85EC38c4)

The motherboard looks very clean with no bulging caps...

From my guesswork, I am wondering if the windows updates I downloaded had a video driver that was not compatible.

She is a retired lovely person I would like to help.  I tried safe mode boot with networking with same results.  I ran mem test 86 with no issues.  I also ran a hard drive test that showed no errors.  I put the hd in my system with a usb adapter and all her files are intact.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A STOP 0x8E (short for 0x0000008E) is quite often a hardware issue.
See the Usual Causes section here: http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html#0x0000008E

BUT, the error points to a memory access problem (the 0xc0000005 thing) - so it could be either hardware or software.

So, start with these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

While running them, please also provide this report so we can make a detailed analysis:  http://omgdebugging.com/bsod-inspector/
When done a Notepad document will open with the name of the file and it's location. (By default it'll be a .zip file located on your Desktop)
Simply upload the .zip file with your next post and we'll move on from there.

Start with the bootable diagnostics.  The MemTest, HDD, and virus checks are all bootable.

Here's a page with only them:  http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html

Try Startup Repair:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/repair-windows-with-windows-startup-repair/

Beyond that, consider backing up her data and reinstalling Vista - that'll be a lot quicker than troubleshooting a non-working system.

Thanks for the help...I ran memtest 86 as well as a WD disc check and all showed good.  I then followed the startup repair you suggested and the 3rd time it worked...

How do I mark as solved?
