My friend has a computer that is only around 3 years old but the hdd is making awful clicking noises and is obvisouly on its way out. He bought a new hdd recently and wants me to install the new drive. He however does not wish to install his 50+ applications over again. Is there a way that I can create a mirror image of the drive and load it onto the new one?

You can try Acronis True Image here is a Google search page for it.

Or Norton Ghost.

You can also search the hard drive manufacturer's support site for migration software that transfers everything from the old disk to the new one.

Be careful if this is also the boot drive for the PC. Sometimes Windows throws a hissy-fit if you try and swap components like this.

I'd suggest reading this article before proceeding with the swap (but still make the image just in case the hard drive goes dead on you).

Used the Acronis Migrate Easy. Worked flawlessly. Used an 80GB external usb drive to put the clone image on. Then I just swapped out the drives and it works like new.

Great! Save the image just in case you need it again. Also, you may want to update it every once in a while so that you've got an updated copy in case of a system crash!
