I have spent days trying various fixes found on the web, to no avail. My laptop won't shut down cleanly, windows update won't work, sfc won't start. I assume the issues are related but can't find the root cause.

What should I be looking for?

Here are some things I've tried.
1) uninstalled all old unused software
2) did a disk cleanup
3) ran full system scans with malwarebytes, Microsoft SE, AdAware, and SpyBot. Only one minor issue found.
4) ran FixIt 50202 -- standard mode froze, aggressive mode completed but did not fix the problem
5) ran SURT -- it froze
6) checked the component based servicing version registry keys -- It appears correct
7) reset default file permissions using iCal, sfc still didn't work
8) cleared the windows\servicing\sessions folder (by changing the folder ownership)
9) ran FixIt again in aggressive mode - system froze at logout screen on restart (no spinning wheel for 10 minutes)

Nothing so far has worked. Windows update fails with error 80080005 and sfc fails "window resource protection could not start the repair service"

Since everything works except update and shutdown I'd like to not reload windows, but I'm out of ideas and trolling for similar threads isn't working. What is my next first step?

Thanks!

You seem to have AdAware AV and MSE installed and running at the same time.  I suggest that you uninstall each (each may be damaged), then install one...update it and run a full scan.

You have errors reflecting DCOM and System Restore, which I believe may be indicative of possible malware.  Since that is not handled in this forum, I just mention it if the attempts here prove to be less than fruitful.

It probably would not hurt if you ran the chkdsk /r and sfc /scannow commands.

I uninstalled both programs and before I install anything back I thought I would try a sfc scan. It still will not run. "Windows resource protection could not start the repair service". Seems like the Dcom and update service are still causing trouble. Do I need to move over to the malware forum?

I would, if I were you.  The worst thing that can result is that they tell you that you don't have a malware problem and need to come back to your topic here...that's not a bad thing :).
